ah yes that old chestnut. Christ wasn't born in Croydon cos they couldnt find a virgin and Three Wise men ?

Virgins in Croydon ? its a curious characteristic of Christianity that it has always had celibate Saints, monks, nuns etc. And yet some other religions like to besmirch Christianity for 'dressing their women like slags' while themselves not having a big tradition of adult-celibates ?
A curious paradox. If we are looking for a moral high-ground, then surely behaving virtuously is better than claiming to be virtuous ?

Ancient Greece also held Virgins in high esteem and being close to the Gods. As did the Romans with their vestle virgins. Celibate women are also placed on a pedestal in Hinduism.

Christmas is primarily for kids and those who still like to go out and get pissed.

A winter festival has existed for thousands of years, be it Pagan, Roman and latterly, Christian.

In modern times, it's more about boosting shop sales, crap TV and Father Christmas.

I'm more than happy to remove the religious elements as long as we remove all religion from everything.
I'm not happy for idiots to erase our cultural Christianity to please people of other religions. That is completely unacceptable. One suspects that it's more about commerce than diversity.

my newspaper article above mentions a certain Lefty Animal Welfare NGO.

They are protesting us having a few donkeys standing indoors at a Christmas Crib. They also seem to strongly oppose Pork, Ham and pig farming. Having googled the NGO i cannot find one syllable of protest from them about inhumane religious animal-slaughter , nothing, not a word. Unless i am gravely mistaken.

Is the NGO sector is like the fifth column ? What Thatcher called 'the enemy within' ?

People have a right to disagree and choose to leave the church. Does not make them any kind of phobic.

I'm not a Christian or religious at all so my opinion is skewed. However I thought the whole point of organised religion is that it is an anchor for those that need it.

So through relationship problems, bereavement or other emotional crisis the faithful can cling to their religion as being the one constant in their life.

So I really don't get religions that change their attitudes to fit in with modern thinking, that is not what an anchor is.

But then that is just me.

Mobile phones, jet travel, refrigeration (dietary religious teachings), mass media......... any religion that doesnt evolve with the times is doomed to disappear. The old to the new. Its like comparing 1890 football to the World Cup today.

Our new Pope is banging on about AI and morality. That is certainly a speech that never happened in the Vatican before.

Darwin had the idea that 'as environments change, some species benefit and other lose out'. The best case-in-point......dark and bright moths that lived on trees during the Industrial Revolution. The smokestacks darkened the barks of all the trees, thus making one moth better camoflaged and allowing the other moth to be lunch for birds. And so one type of moth proliferated and had a boom.

We can say something similar with many ideologies, political parties, fashions, technologies and indeed.....Religions. An idea whose time has come to pass.

Electric cars have been with us for at least 120 years.....only now have they become a valid option for the average Nigel.

Religions come and go. They proliferate and/or they die out. Twas ever thus. Adapt or die out. Or benefit from the good fortune of the environment altering in your favour.

In 1928 Hitler & the Nazi's were regarded as violent crackpots who nobody would ever vote for. After the Wall Street Crash, the Great Depression and German Hyperinflation.....the environment changed. Voters got angry...so they voted for Mr Angry. A fella whose ideology was fairly similar before, during, and after October 1929.

The new Pope is not fit for purpose, as many of the others were not, The Church survives in spite of the Vatican IMHO.

True. The reformation gave them all a good kicking. Taught them a few lessons about Darwin and how you can fade away if you lose your eye on the ball. I could easily see Latin America/Africa turning against a Liberal Lefty Pope who waves rainbow flags.....Conservatives will seek the religion that best reflects their outlook.

Popes lose followers, a bit like King Charles losing the Anne Widdicombe types. Similar to restaurants, religion is a competitive marketplace. Some consumer-tastes change and some are constant.
