There is a little bit of chat on line about Chris Rigg of Sunderland.

20 odd games last season, and played every game this season. Still only 17. Stock rising rapidly.

As with Warton at Blackburn, looks like he is capable at easily stepping up a level.

LWB can wait, I'd go all guns to get this guy!

£25 m? He'd better live up to his potential.

Love the idea. Prodigious talent. England youth caps. He alone would reduce the average age of the team by a year! But...

Not e.g. England U19. He plays within his age range at international level. He is not THAT good.

And if he came and went directly into the 1st team, who would he replace? Wharton? Lerma? Doucoure? Hughes? When match fit (probably the root of our current woes) that's a good top half midfield. We are spoilt.

And would a player getting all that 1st team football in front of his local, adoring Mackem fans at the Stadium of Light readily uproot and trade all that for U21 at the VBS Community Stadium?

Of course not. But we might acquire and lend to Sunderland for a couple of seasons.

Hometown hero Wharton went from bossing the Championship at Blackburn, to our best central midfielder in about 2 games. Rigg is only 17....potential is limitless. He's played 35 championship games, Wharton had 44. So by Jan they'll be in an almost identical position (but Rigg 2 years younger)

Who would he replace...Lerma, Doucoure, Hughes.

And why would he move......this could be the carbon copy of the Wharton situation. Who made his PL debut in his first match, started the next 15, and went to the Euros with the England national team.

If I was Dougie, I'd mention the last bit.

Wharton was not an unknown quantity, the reason we got him was because the club was willing to pay what Blackburn wanted when other clubs wanted to wait until the summer. It may be a similar situation here where if we bid in January we might get him, as he might not be seen as a first-team player for a big club whereas he would likely get immediate game time with us. Whether he would want to join is another matter and could well depend on the fortunes of both clubs between now and January. From YouTube clips he does look some player for 17-years.

I hear you, but there is a chasm of difference between the human body at 17 and at 20. This league is tough and physical.

Also, the toll on Wharton at 20 has shown. The problems he has just gone under the knife for relate to playing in the highest league at the youngest age.

That said, the Championship is no slouch and there are more games. But we return to: who would step aside for him? Given the age and size and the way they play, it would have to be... Wharton.

He would need an enforcer to compliment him i.e. one of the 3 you mention.

Thus, we buy and he stays on loan at Sunderland; or he comes as Wharton's understudy.

(Or this is all just idle chat reacting to clickbait)

I get it, but if at 17 you are the standout player at the top club in the championship. I think your body is doing ok.

Don't see any reason why he couldn't play with Wharton.

I dont subscribe to this not old enough cliche. Look at Barca, if you are old enough you are good enough.

I hope not, but this could have a bit of a "Bostock" feel to it. He may look like he is going to be the next big thing at 17 but so did Bostock and look what happened there. To me, this would feel like much more of a gamble that Wharton.

I would rather we concentrated on a new LWB. But maybe we can do both?

Strangely enough, I believe he is left footed and can play wing back. But he seems to be midfield mostly. I could be wrong: just an educated feeling I have

I’m going to watch Ebsfleet tomorrow v Solihull moors (I think that Bostock is playing for them now) what a decline that is.
