Censorship and Social Media

the woman in the link below, 6 months jail for writing some nasty words.

And it all poses a question : what is the difference between her writing nasty violent words and any politician who writes a cheque for 500 million quids worth of armaments ?

As much as I agree with you and I don't like some politicians you can't really go around saying things like “I hope somebody does something to your family” to him.

It sounds like she was drunk while sending them. I think a suspended sentence and a fine would have given her a lesson.

Do you seriously not know the answer to your question?

She directly called for harm to be done to someone.

Someone paying that much for armaments is most likely going to work for, or represent, a government. Therefore they are not themselves harming anyone. They are helping provide a country with the means to defend themselves or attack others. It’s a job.

I've only really read the headline but personally I think when it comes to the 'hurty words' stuff going straight to jail seems a bit much.
Some people have mental health problems which means that sabbaticals from social media isn't the worst option.....if other people's opinions hurt so much then just don't do political culture war on the Internet.

But some, maybe this being a case in point, can't help themselves?

I'd say that writing what she wrote is out of order......A prison sentence seems like a hammer to crack a nut, kind of the powerful taking advantage over the powerless. Seems like they made an example of her.

Death threats to people are made all the time and many many times to public figures and of course private ones. You see some real twisted stuff but what this smacks to me is of political figures getting hyper sensitive protection compared to others.

Perhaps something like a contact ban, with suspended fines would be a more sensible first option.

But is this the new norm over in the land of Guinness?

Would this be done for Farage or Starmer?

Like those calling for death to the IDF? Haven’t seen those get a prison sentence

"Death death to the IDF", like that?

Can you not see the difference?

Her remarks were about a specific individual.

Those chanting about the demise of a military force, however distasteful it may be, are not. Military forces either kill, or be killed. It’s what they do.

True. If you call to wipe out many people then clearly that's not as bad

So the chant did not call for harm to be done to someone? Straw clutching at its best. And all those who, on a regular basis, call for death to Jews? That’s ok as it’s not to one individual? Unbelievable response

so help me to understand. Any incitement to violence is wrong. And deserves punishing, as is seen as appropriate. But it seems to be meted out differently for....?

a. written on an electronic Social Network

b. written in a Holy textbook , as sold in any Croydon Bookshop

And then there is the old chestnut...."we must forgive those writings cos they were written ages ago".....and my response is always to dig up some other nasty shyte and ask if all of that is ok too then ? The book of Leviticus that condemns you for wearing cotton, wool and silk at the same time ?

I really don't get why people keep responding to an obvious time waster.

He is only here to contradict anyone he sees as right wing, irrespective of reason.

He needs help, not attention.

I don't think Alf Garnett is getting any re-runs either

Chanting something that is essentially a protest against the policies of Israel towards the people in Gaza is not wishing personal harm on the individual members of the IDF. They want to see the death of their action in Gaza. Not of the serving soldiers.

Anyone being anti semitic deserves to be punished. No argument about that.

I loath anti-semites and supporters of Hamaz.

I loath time-waster and trolls.
