Calling Parish.

I think we were not truly expecting to be in Europe this season, so the spend that was required was not properly prepared for and the targets we had were based on another incremental improvement of the squad. Parish was never going to throw money at high risk targets without the necessary due diligence.

He now has a decision to make in January. He's had another 4 months to discuss with OG and the scouts to identify what we need, and who is available in our price band. Only OG really knows if he intends to be here next year, but I do not think that should stop us from getting in the necessary reinforcements.
If we don't, and we lose OG and AW, JPM and DM in the summer (god forbid) then our squad will be discernably weaker for any new manager.

Such departures would certainly swell the coffers and the new manager would probably have significant funds to build a team to his specification.
In January we build a team to the specification of Glasner who will be at 'Pastures new' next season.

Highly unlikely we lose Wharton in the summer but we will lose Guehi and possibly Munoz & Mateta.

Personally think we should sell Guehi & Mateta in Jan and reinvest in Brenan or Bobb, Boey, Strand Larson & a CB.

The new man will need time to work with the squad and identify what he wants. That takes time. If history is anything to go by, we'll be well into the season by the time these players are sold and replacements are bought.
I'd much rather have a squad healthy enough to support a managerial transition that one where a total rebuild is required. (although I dare say Parish won't allow a 'Mass exodus')

It might be a case of pruning shears rather than a woodcutter's axe.

Buying the Strand would be cheaper! 😆

Sorry, but I don't agree with your first paragraph.

At the very least, European football should have been on the clubs radar from the time we beat Villa in the semi final. That's when it became a possibility.

I think a combination of Freedmans departure, the battle with UEFA and Steve Parish's natural inclination towards the cautious all played their part. And throw in the uncertainty over Eze and Guehi and the net result was we didn't strengthen the squad enough.

Our current struggles were widely predicted by pundits in the media and don't come as a surprise to many on here as well.

As you say in your second paragraph, a situation exists where there is a clear need to spend in the transfer window. The lack of clarity over OG's position doesn't help in this instance.

He cost Wolves £23 Mill. A throw-back centre-forward who likes to get on the end of crosses.
He scored 14 goals for Wolves last season and in the previous season he netted 13 times in La Liga.
He will not be at Wolves next season, perhaps he will depart in January.
If you look good in the Wolves to you must be mustard. 👍

On the clubs radar, maybe, but window planning/budget must go on before that Villa semi. and a possibility, yes, but we were still massive Underdogs in the final. I just wonder if we played the conservative game too much, and the realisation that we really needed a squad capable of competing (in any level) in Europe came too late, and the club decided not to change their transfer plans. Certainly the UEFA debacle wouldn't have helped, and also think that once we finally lost our appeal, the management (as many of the fans have) thought the Conference League would be a breeze.

I also wonder if OG had the foresight to challenge Parish with the need to spend at the time. Afterall, he's the only one with ANY European pedigree and experience at the club. You would hope he did, and he recent comments regarding the 'underspend' came despite his requests at the time.

At present, Mateta does not seem a big loss.
Cash in while his stock is still reasonable.
If he continues all season in his current form, itll be a big drop in value (& interest from other clubs)

Munoz needs to stay.

Cannot see him leaving in January. The atmosphere with the fans and management is very toxic and anything making it worse would not be good for either. Summer move much more likely. Also cannot see a mass sell here in Jan nor a huge input to the squad. Most business will be done in the summer when OG as well as Guehi will leave and perhaps Munoz n JPM.

January is a notoriously difficult time to do good transfer business. That said when Sam arrived think we got PVA, Schlupp and Sakho on loan which helped in our relegation scrap that season.
