Call a general election petition

It's interesting but will do little more than make people feel that they are doing something.

For this to be successful we may as well be saying ok let's just not have a government or political system. Let's put everything out to a ballot and see what happens.

Maybe I am cynical but every politician offers loads during a campaign and delivers little of it. It's dead easy to promise things in opposition when you know you will not have to deliver. Equally if you are in power it's as easy to kick the cam down the road, make decisions now and worry about the ramifications later.

I think it is unfair to make any judgements now, too early so for me jury is out

Unlike some Remoaners who refused to accept the result of the referendum I do believe in democracy even when it goes against my wishes.

I reserve the right to complain but Labour has a clear mandate to govern for 5 years.

PS
My mate is on a train with Jess Phillips so I have been getting a running commentary as he is earwigging her chat. She claims she has been approached to be leader but has said she is not interested.

We know how thin skinned Starmer is & it will bother him that people have a way to publicly demonstrate how disliked he is.
This will be the current thing until Labour's next balls up which I imagine isn't far off.

I quite like Jess Phillips. Her recent book makes for interesting reading regardless of your political slant.

Just past 2 million signatures

I believe it is four years and ten months away, like you i'm dead keen to show the countries support for Labour, No lying by Boris, No printing dodgy money unfunded by Truss,No D-Day dodgers like shifty Sunak. No wonder Britain voted Labour in.

Labour plan to abolish two tier council structures. In principle I am in agreement with cutting red tape but the devil is in the detail.

What if you have an efficient well funded local district council that is then rolled up into a cash strapped inefficient large council? Is that fair?

What if the larger council then decides to overturn local planning decisions.

I maybe jumping the gun but it does suggest that Labour are looking at ways to steamroller through their building plans whilst helping out their mates in local government who couldn't organise a drink up in a brewery.

I have to admit that I finding tories endlelly amusing ,can you imagine them in a bookies,I don't like the result of the 3:30 the wrong horse won can it be re-run? 😊 😆😉

I live in Deal which had a very strong mining community in years gone by, there were several active coal mines in the region, there was and still is a very high hatred of Margaret Thatcher and her government closing them back in the 80’s. Families have long memories and will never forgive or forget and never vote for a conservative government.

Many people I know were rejoicing when Kier Starmer won the the general election however many are not happy at all with the decisions being implemented and the way things are turning out. I think a lot are regretting their choice, sometimes you don’t appreciate something until it’s gone.

So if this pointless petition gets a new general election and the conservatives win, then what another petition set up by labour voters?
Sadly regardless of your political viewpoint, this is called democracy we allow people to vote for a government.

Sorry but no a series of petitions is not democracy.

Parliament set the framework for fixed terms and fixed elections so e time ago.

That's democracy

I agree with you that our parliamentary system is largely based on fixed terms and elections, the results of which which the electorate needs to accept.

But let's not call that democracy. Any system where the main chamber's winning party, or winning coalition, routinely gets under 45% of the votes cast is not democratic by definition.
