Budget 2024

The 'National Front' are of course no longer in existence.
Apropos Braverman I have great respect and admiration for the lady. She is on my 'Wing' of the Conservative Party and is supporting Robert Jenrick.
According to recent reports,Kemi is miles ahead of Jenrick in voting intentions of the Membership.

The last poll I witnessed, about a week ago had Kemi Badenoch in the lead.
I know at least 56 peers have signalled their support for her.
I have campaigned for Robert Jenrick.

The Campaign Team have just heard from CCHQ that more and more people have been voting in the final few days of this contest. Turnout is surging.

As someone who works in the industry, I think we're quite relieved as we were expected worse.

The one which will hurt some people is the new rule around making DC pension savings liable to IHT from 2027.

There will be many people who have worked hard and saved and invested diligently into their pensions their whole lives, who treat their pension as a vehicle to pass wealth to their family. Poof! Suddenly gone.

For those young enough and in good health, pension savings could be used to buy life insurance to cover the IHT liability (set up to pay into trust), but the monthly premiums won't be cheap.

For those who are old/bad health, they won't qualify for life insurance. Doomed. Hundreds of thousands which you thought was going to your family instead going to HMRC. Tough pill to swallow.

At least they didn't touch the tax relief on pension contributions.

How very remiss of me.

I do not envisage the scenario you have advocated on the basis that Farage has consistently stated he wishes to destroy the Conservative Party. His focus is on his Reform party.
Not quite. He's said that he would not join the Conservative party "As it is".

The devil, as always, is in the detail.

I don't care about charisma or personality as long as whoever is in office is competent, pragmatic and honest, whichever side they're on, and leads an equally competent team. The PM can be a charming, joke telling thrill seeker but it won't do us any good unless he or she is good at their job and has reasonable and implementable policies.
Completely agree, actually, Teddy.

I do recall hoe the Sun newspaper had a psychiatrist declare Tony Benn to be mentally ill before one by election and all the subsequent attempted charter assassinations since where opponents frequently personally attack politicians and the public fall for it.

Going back to Benn. The number of people who made comments like ' I agree with a lot of what he says but he's mad, isn't he' - legion.
I happen to agree that Starmer is boring and uninspiring but I'll wait to see how the policies work out - given time. Not like the majority on here who were jumping all over the labour party the day it came to power.

Very few on here give a tinker's cuss about what Labour do; they're just vehemently opposed. End of...

Labour's fate lies with the NHS. They are throwing huge sums at it but unless the public see a huge improvement in services by the next GE, I think it will do for them.

I can't believe people are so surprised at the Labour party, Borrow, tax, spend, budget. With the majority of the money going to state controlled bodies. It's what they do every time. For those old enough, this reminds me of Wilson/Callaghan era. Bankrupted the country and lead to the winter of discontent which created the conditions for Mrs T's rise to power. Hopefully history will repeat itself .

The problem is that many seem to look as politics as some kind of reality show and consequently politicians need to appear to be, if not celebrities, then at at least as "personalities".

I'm afraid to say that Mrs T has been deceased for some time so not much chance of that.

I dislike Starmer immensely but I hope it works out, even though I have reservations. I listened to LBC this morning and at least James O Brien honestly admitted he doesn’t know if it’ll work. The only explanation of why was that they’re fixing things from the bottom up, nothing else. I am sceptical.

There are a few things that could be a real problem.

The cost of employers NI rising meaning possible redundancies, no hiring, or at best, problems with inflation.

Bond yields increasing over the course of this government and budget, causing a problem for the government and for mortgage borrowers, especially if they’re earning less or they’ve become jobless.

The one thing that’s annoyed me about all this is the amount of lefties who think all businesses are awash with cash and there’s no consequences to raising employers NI, like making it cost more to employ or just keep people on. Many of them are mad as f so it’s no surprise.

Rachel Reeves has just admitted that raising employers NI could result in slower wage growth. Well it’ll take longer to go over income tax thresholds I suppose. Look on the bright side.

Pound falling sharply and bond markets rising and yet that incompetent pair Starmer, and Reeves naively think that yesterday's calamitous Budget will magically achieve growth.
The pound isn’t in problems like the bond markets. The bond markets might recover but they’ve been going in a bad direction since the election anticipating this budget and they’re continuing in that direction.

Mortgages will increase

Cost of borrowing for businesses will go up as well as cost of staff.

Hmmm.

Yes, you are correct, I should've checked my post. 1-0 to you. As for your Q? Stirling is correct you really do want posters to do your work for you, never mind. Have a nice evening.
No, I want posters to say where they did their work, to be specific with their terminology, to say where they got their information. I'm sure it wouldn't surprise you to hear that many will spout facts that are not correct and opinions based on what they've heard anecdotally and then treat them as 'facts'

And it's not '1-0 to me; I don't consider this to be a contest, Eagleman.
Thanks, I've had a lovely day and hope it carries on through the evening.

Cheers.
