Brighton vs Crystal Palace match thread

Noticed that the CPFC app has not offered the chance to vote for the Player of the Match (unless I have missed this)?
Obvious choice would be Canvot. First to score yesterday 👍 :football:

Three players from our defence yesterday are young, inexperienced and comparative novices at Premier League level and all looked shell shocked yesterday.
The defence does not look drilled and even the usually reliable Mitchell and Richards look very uncomfortable.
The midfield offers no protection to the defence and our lightweight forwards are physically dominated by the opposition defence.
We lost duels all over the field yesterday.

Of course there are extenuating circumstances with the seemingly poor defensive recruitment, the constantly changing defence , the lack of opportunity to drill players with the international break and fixture schedule.

At the moment none of the players recruited have had the desired impact other than perhaps Timber.
Early days in fairness, but it’s not unreasonable to expect one or two more to have made a contribution or looked the part.
I don’t expect McNeil, Guessand, Osorio and Pino to make a significant contribution any time soon and neither of the RWBs look defensively sound.

It will make a huge difference if we can get Sarr and Mateta back fit and firing as they will give opposing defences something to think about.
They will not be so easily dominated physically.
The Brighton defence swatted our attack way yesterday as if we were occasionally an irritating fly.

So many questions remain to be answered and decisions to be made.
I meant Gozo not Pino

At the end of the day, we are not the same team with Eze, Olise, Guehi, Lacroix and Munoz. And effectively to date, Sarr and Mateta. So that’s 7 of our first 11 in recent times. The replacements have been Pino, McNeill and hot pitch of second rate and injury prone defenders. Basically this season will be a long hard fight to survive relegation. We don’t have one player with individual flair that can light up a game. The priority in the January window is to actually buy two very good centre halves and perhaps a right back. The rest of the team we can make do with. It was interesting that when Mateta came on, he immediately made himself a nuisance compared to the totally ineffectual JSL. Leaving Sarr on the bench and not starting him was a crass decision. Pino looks more lightweight with each passing game.

In summary, the players looked shot and bereft of confidence. Even Wharton looked miserable and very poor yesterday. Sadly, I think we need a change of manager as the players look lost and rudderless.

We're on the same points as Man United despite their longest winless start for 40 years and Sky Sports this morning pointed out they're still only 5 points off 5th place.

All very true, and as I have mentioned, there is no spine to the team, no leaders of men. That Sage has made the lightweight and ineffectual Wharton captain says it all really. It's just a loose conglomerate of individuals roaming and lumbering around quite happy to collect their pay packet every week with absolutely no shame.
Relegation material with or without Sage - it's down to the board and a lack of serious successional planning after the FA Cup victory. One would have thought that might have the springboard, but Glasner was right in his first damning criticism of the club and the lack of ambition. The rot started long before Sage arrived, but of course he'll be the one to carry the can while Parish plays with his toy model of the new stand. It'll look good in the Championship.

Could be us spuds and city all with a new ground or improvements in the championship

Someone in the game once told me around ten years ago that it was a blend of two reasons:

1. Fashion (mainly the influence of Barcelona/Spain)
2. The increasing use of data in the game which points to positive risk/reward

I think there has always been a place for playing out from the back - if you have the players to do it, and if you have the overall game plan lined up right. But even the best teams know that you have to mix it up.

I remember the headlines when Arsenal under Wenger "ambushed" Fulham one year by going long and bypassing their press. "Gunslingers" Henry and Berkamp had field days in the newspaper headlines the next day. Leicester won the league in 2016 with a direct style of play based on Vardy's pace in behind. Brentford mix it up really well and are a very dangerous modern day opponent as a result.

Even teams like Man City under Guardiola are able to play such a short game because the threat of forwards like Haaland running in behind, and midfielders like De Bruyne who can pick them out, makes oppositions think twice about pressing.

I think we lack the in game intelligence/leadership to get the blend right, unless it is the staff deliberately telling them to play only this way in which case we may have hired the francophone Russell Martin. Time will tell.
It's a very dodgy tactic if it's the only one being used and invites pressure - particularly when, if it even gets that far, it involves passing to a midfield player deep in his own half and facing his own goal.

Genuine question....

How much of the disorganisation at the back is a result of Henderson not being in goal organising things and geeing up the defence?

I can't recall seeing/hearing Benitez being very vocal

I hope we will see a change of attitude when Henderson is back between the sticks

I want to see the passion back in the defence, with high fives after blocks and tackles - not seeing much of a that at the moment (well, not actually seeing many blocks of tackles at the moment!!! 🤪)

7 points from 7 games is relegation form... When we get to 15 games if it's 15 points then he has to go. Despite the recent departures we still have enough decent players to get a draw at Brighton surely?
There's something to be aligned with Notts. Forest under Glasner and their performance yesterday against title-chasing Arsenal and the tight defence displayed that yielded just the one shot (and the one decisive goal). Glasner's defensive tactics (esp. following previous Palace result that exposed weaknesses yet considerably improved yesterday) vs. Sage yet with players that he has available for the role.

Hope so but it would help if the goalkeeper took his own goal kicks and gave them a good wallop. Defenders exchanging pointless passes with the ball ending up where it started is just annoying.

Teams pass the all around at the back to invite the 'Press' which hopefully leaves gaps to exploit.
It also makes the pitch bigger forcing opponents to cover more ground and retains control rather than a long punt which results in a 50/50 duel with a risk of surrendering possession.

Yes, but we just don't have the players to do it and it only has to go wrong once.

I was there did we drop our heads 👍🏻
I’ve always been proud to say I was there, even with my leg in plaster 😁

Even that season we ended up staying up and 7 minutes from winning the FA Cup, the game after we went down to a good saints team and got a 1-1 draw, so it did galvanise us

Some of these defenders couldn't trap a bag of cement yet they are expected and instructed to control a moving object (the ball) all the while being pressured by the opposition? Ha ha ha!

To my 12 year old (Gold Member) son.

Do you want to keep the birthday card you got from the Club.

"Of course"

It is only signed by Pierre Sage who just led us to a 5-0 thumping by the Weed.

"Bin it!"

But it's not just the defence that is the problem in my opinion.

It's been an unsettled unit so far this season and that certainly doesn't help.

However, as a team we are just too easy to play against. The back three get scant protection from the midfield. Take a look at Brighton's third goal yesterday, Wharton and Timber trailing behind their midfield players. The ball rarely sticks with JSL and therefore turns over to the opposition. Khalailli looks a way off of the standard required at this level.

In possession we look ok. Out of it, really poor.
