Brighton vs Crystal Palace match thread

We cannot defend and that starts up front.
Lerma should have started centre back today with Richards on the right and Canvot on the left.
Khalali cannot defend at all.
We have no strength or spine.
We will leak goals as we are and will likely be relegated.
Sage is only a part of the problem but if he played the central defenders in their best slots it would help.

I just watched Sky 30 min highlights after arriving on hols in Egypt.

2 goals should've been disallowed. 1 for offside and handball, the last one for Dunk clotheslining Hughes who was marking the assister. We also scored for them, and also they got a fluke deflection.

Then there was goal of the season.

So 1 nil loss Vs most in form side away from home......honest guv

I've noticed that there doesn't seem to be the vitriolic ranting that usually accompanies a defeat like that suffered today. A little annoyed and upset maybe, but nothing too over the top. Perhaps fans have accepted the inevitable.

We all predicted it and it came to pass. Some of us thought this season and Sage’s tenure might play out like this. We hoped to be wrong but something has been wrong ever since he was appointed

Yes, there is a certain inevitability to it all. It doesn't surprise.

Is it just me or is Khalaili absolute shite?
Prior to his signing, the information I received was that he could play as a wing-back or as a winger, he was a player who possessed running power and who was fleet of foot.
Defensively for us he has been found wanting particularly in 1 v 1 situations. He played as a striker for most of his youth career and he appears as a player who is more accomplished attacking than defending.

Since I started playing and watching the game 60 years ago the keeper and defenders thumped the ball up front and you fought for it in opposition's half Why has f ing about with it in your own penalty area become so important and particularly when we are so poss poor at it

Exactly!! Even if jsl wasn't winning the initial balls up to him we could of got players around him to win the second ball rather than just passing it around the back 3 only to give it away.

It would appear that our supporters fully expected a drubbing by a rampant Brighton side.
I for one was 'Spitting tacks' and in a state of apoplexy watching that debacle.

Someone in the game once told me around ten years ago that it was a blend of two reasons:

1. Fashion (mainly the influence of Barcelona/Spain)
2. The increasing use of data in the game which points to positive risk/reward

I think there has always been a place for playing out from the back - if you have the players to do it, and if you have the overall game plan lined up right. But even the best teams know that you have to mix it up.

I remember the headlines when Arsenal under Wenger "ambushed" Fulham one year by going long and bypassing their press. "Gunslingers" Henry and Berkamp had field days in the newspaper headlines the next day. Leicester won the league in 2016 with a direct style of play based on Vardy's pace in behind. Brentford mix it up really well and are a very dangerous modern day opponent as a result.

Even teams like Man City under Guardiola are able to play such a short game because the threat of forwards like Haaland running in behind, and midfielders like De Bruyne who can pick them out, makes oppositions think twice about pressing.

I think we lack the in game intelligence/leadership to get the blend right, unless it is the staff deliberately telling them to play only this way in which case we may have hired the francophone Russell Martin. Time will tell.

Three players from our defence yesterday are young, inexperienced and comparative novices at Premier League level and all looked shell shocked yesterday.
The defence does not look drilled and even the usually reliable Mitchell and Richards look very uncomfortable.
The midfield offers no protection to the defence and our lightweight forwards are physically dominated by the opposition defence.
We lost duels all over the field yesterday.

Of course there are extenuating circumstances with the seemingly poor defensive recruitment, the constantly changing defence , the lack of opportunity to drill players with the international break and fixture schedule.

At the moment none of the players recruited have had the desired impact other than perhaps Timber.
Early days in fairness, but it’s not unreasonable to expect one or two more to have made a contribution or looked the part.
I don’t expect McNeil, Guessand, Osorio and Pino to make a significant contribution any time soon and neither of the RWBs look defensively sound.

It will make a huge difference if we can get Sarr and Mateta back fit and firing as they will give opposing defences something to think about.
They will not be so easily dominated physically.
The Brighton defence swatted our attack way yesterday as if we were occasionally an irritating fly.

So many questions remain to be answered and decisions to be made.

I doubt anyone was surprised by the drubbing yesterday.

1. We have been asking for this from day 1 this season, fortunately for us, the opposition weren't taking their chances until yesterday.

2. We have been getting away with it at Brighton for years, nicking draws and wins against the run of play. Our luck was bound to run out one day.

Sage needs to pull his finger out, if he refuses to change his tactics he will be gone by Christmas. Let's hope he can compromise.
