I thought it was a weirdly superb performance, 30% possession, but 3 goals and should have been 6. Easily managed anything Villa limply tossed at us (I would have said 'thrown', but they weren't that good!) some great team defending and last ditch tackles. but when we got an opportunity we exploded into action with directness and purpose.
It's telling that the 3 we scored were from stealing the ball in their half and capitalising. BUT only tells 1/2 the story; The other 3 goals we should have had (JPMs inexpicably ruled out goal, and later Pen miss, then TM's airshot) all came from more traditional counter attacking and build up.
We won simply because we picked our moments to press and transitioned from defence to attack with amazing speed, skill and ruthlessness and was as good a counter attacking performance as I have seen from any team. We'll need it again vs. Man City, as they are much more of an attacking threat than Villa.
Bring it on.
Addendum: Wasn't massively Impressed with Wharton yesterday. improved in the 2nd half, but missed a lot of tackles, and was often bypassed too easily in midfield. Add in a few misplaced passes, and how much he was blowing at the end, and I was quite relieved to see him subbed for Hughes. Not terrible, but needs to get back to where he was pre Euros.
