Ben Chilwell

Chilwell has played a few times for us so I think it's time to start assessing his performance.

To be honest I think he's been a disappointment. I appreciate that he is not as good a defender as Mitchell but I was expecting more from him on the attacking front e.g. Munoz.

It maybe that this is due to lack of match fitness / practice but so far I have seen nothing that warrants his high value. He's not rubbish but if his level of performance remains the same I would be happy to send him back to Chelsea at the end of the season.

Mitchell is still my number 1 and if he goes I would not be looking at Chilwell.

Thoughts!
i'd have to agree, i've been a little underwhelmed.

Of the games he's played he's done ok, but nothing special and defensively he looks a little suspect. Supposedly he is 5 ft 11, but he looks smaller. He's struggled with the odd high ball (as per the everton goal) and i thought he's lack of closing down the guy who shot against Millwall also contributed to their goal (surely you have to move to the ball rather than just stand still as he did).

On Saturday he was only on for 20 minutes, but managed to get pushed over very cheaply in two attacking plays (no fouls given), was easily out muscled just outside our area leading to a chance for Ipswich and was booked for a terrible bit of defending on the half way line (when the guy went down the line and left Chil for dead).

Clearly if Mitch was to get injured it will prove a good bit of business but i can't see him getting any starts for the rest of the season if Mitch stays fit.

When we signed Chilwell, his only appearance this season was back in September against Barrow in the League Cup.
In terms of his defensive qualities, people I have spoken to have opined that he is better going forward than defending.

He's played 21 times for England all at left back. He last played for England in that position in March 2024 so it's not unreasonable to expect him to be at least solid in defence.

Unfortunately he's looked a little lightweight in the tackle and his positioning and decision making have also not been great. I don't think not playing regularly will have too much impact on these parts of his game.

If he was as good as we hoped he would be Chelsea would only sell at silly money.

If he is as good as he has been we won't want him.

Perhaps he and the club are playing the long game. If you are happy here, play moderately!

Agree with those saying he need a little bit of time. Hardly played for a year before joining us. Already he has given us another option at LWB which, if nothing else, will help manage Mitchell’s workload. Some moments of quality as well. All in all a decent loan signing so far. Gives us cover we need without us being all in
