Ann Widdecome was as last century as is Jacob Rees-Mogg. They share far more than just traditional, ultra conservative values. What a daft post, even for you - you are basically saying that no ideas, morals or policies are of value unless they have been dreamt up in the last five minutes!

To be of any use as a conviction politician your convictions have to find common ground with enough voters to be acted upon. There are many people with rock solid convictions that are only shared with a few. Look no further than these pages for evidence of that.

Ann Widdecombe unarguably had convictions but they were rooted in the past and were never going to gather enough support to see her as anything more than a shadow of times long gone.

What we need are people with solid principles who can inspire and lead. Not those who only say what’s popular when they don’t believe it themselves. They need to make their case and earn respect. Thatcher did that. I disagreed with several of her attitudes, whilst agreeing with others, but I always respected her.

He may well turn out to have mental health issues. The signs are certainly there but the reality is we don’t know that, or what his politics are, or if whatever they are whether it was them which motivated him.

So there is no doubt at all here about only one thing! You are making assumptions.

Holding high morals, standards and values are essential for any society to be successful.

That though does not, in any way, mean we must revert to the politics of the past to achieve them.

Exactly the reverse is true. We need to apply them within the framework of the reality of today and not the mists of yesterday.

Being truthful, acting lawfully, caring for the less fortunate, following the golden rule, loving your neighbour. All essential, but done wisely, with the benefit of scientific achievement informing how to apply them.

You don’t need to live in Cornwall or play bowls to live as best you can to those standards. I do, and both do provide support.

The right wingers here, and in politics, are the most deluded group I have ever encountered. They have very selective memories and remember only those things they think used to be better, whilst ignoring the many more that were worse.

What's in the public realm is that he planned and carried out a political assassination. Horrendous as this is, made worse by the nature of the attack on a defenceles old woman.

The killer had left wing literature and clippings of Farage.

Let's not conflate evil with mental health issues.

Society now is quick to go down the " no one sane would do that " road.

Breivik had to be declared insane in Norway because the country could not accept or process that a sane person would do such an act.
