Adam Wharton

Wharton is a Rolls Royce of a player who's abilities are highlighted when team mates are on the same wavelength ,running into the spaces being ready for the pass ect .

Whartons clever passes look like they are incomplete . "He loses possession" they cry . No he doesn't ,well he might sometimes when he gets over adventurous but generally its other players not reading the game . He has also suffered more than most with the club selling our better ball playing centre backs . Guehi and to a lesser extent Lacroix would pass to him when and where he wanted the ball . The current three either miss him out completely or give him a pass that he can do little with with no onward pass being on .
Sages 'tactics' of attacking via the wing backs also sees Wharton time on the ball restricted in areas where he has been seen to do the most damage in the past . The only 'tactic' Sage actually needs is to get Wharton on the ball in the middle of the park in space at any and every opportunity .

The captaincy needs taking away . It hasn't worked ,he just isnt that sort of player . It's effected his own game as he try's to do too much with regard covering all angles talking to refs and so on . He needs to go back to concentrating on his own game ,not worrying about others .

Yes, he does. A lot.

I like Wharton and he's got enormous potential but I do think we cut him a hell of a lot of slack with excuses like this - he's making tons of mistakes in games at the moment, far more than is acceptable for a midfielder with aims of playing regularly for England.

He looks incredibly short of confidence and his technique is letting him down as a result - far from the perfect passer just being let down by his teammates, he's taking loose touches in dangerous positions on the pitch, mishitting passes you'd expect him to make, and getting physically bullied far too regularly.

I agree that Sage's system isn't helping and it's taking him out of his comfort zone, but Wharton also needs to take some accountability for his poor form.

Wharton seems a little lost at the moment.

Definitely being played in deeper position in front of the defence which he's not suited to - not comfortable with the Hughes type of break up play role and his 'no look' one touch passes when they don't come off are giving the ball away in very dangerous areas (I think this is why he didn't get the England call up - loses possession too much and would get punished by top class strikers)

I think being captain is weighing heavily and it was apparent yesterday that communication or geeing up was limited. The team don't seem to have a natural leader at the moment and it's showing.

Thought Pino did put in a shift yesterday but putting him up against Dan Burns when Mateta went off - what was that all about....

At the moment Pino is the only one that seems to be putting in a shift. Not sure why that is, but players who looked great under Glasner (Wharton, Mitchell - and others) just aren’t doing it for Sage? Wharton for instance is lost in his role which has changed under Sage with no help around him plus being made captain which is ludicrous. The back 3 are suffering without the two defensive midfielders in front of them then we have our wingbacks too far forward putting in awful passes and not being able to get back to support our defence. It really is a mess on the pitch with no direction from the sidelines

Might be unfair on him since few captains seem to do much directing/encouraging but it's not clear on television what his captaincy entails beyond tossing the coin.

It would be a sad sterile game if we all had the same opinions and yours is one CPFCSaturn that can be taken with some credit . I would just like you to consider why and then refer back to my post .

For instance you say 'he is taking lose touches in dangerous positions on the pitch' I say 'the current three pass to him when he can do little with it ' . We can both be seeing the same picture on that if not the bigger picture of why . The miss hit passes come from that as does Wharton taking more chances as our attack becomes ineffective . Anyone can play safe sideways and backward passes and never hit a bad pass .
I would agree he gets bullied but again thats him getting bogged down in midfield battles with bigger stronger players ,its why he needs the ball when he is in space not when he has the likes of Joelinton up his backside as was often the case on Sunday .

I'm sure he takes responsibility for his 'form' and will adapt to the differing roles he is asked to play . I do fear though we wont see the best version of Adam Wharton until we have some better players at the back .It could be some while .

Of course there are system and personnel issues in the team that are not helping him, but my point is that Wharton also has to bear some responsibility for his performances.

I don’t think you can dismiss the volume of mistakes he’s making as the fault of his teammates.

It can both be true that Wharton needs to take accountability for his performances and it says nothing good about the manager that most players have regressed.

Adam Wharton is a great player. His game is suffering because the team as a whole is so poorly coached, and visibly none of the players know what they are doing. Get a decent manager and coaching team and the players will be transformed.

Football team has 2 captains 1 in defence and 1 covering midfield and forwards , we haven't 1 person with tough personality. Last ones was lacroix and Mateta gee things up . As out and out leaders I'm getting as far back as jedi's mind you McArthur was strong

I still maintain the best Wharton has EVER looked was a couple of season ago when he had Will Hughes beside him for a sustained period. Hughes took care of the dirty work and played simple passes to Adam, who could then dictate play from slightly further up. Timber does this to a degree, which is why Wharton had a couple of stronger games more recently, but he does tend to roam forward a bit too much and doesn't have the positional discipline of Hughes. But looks like Timber is the future there, so they are going to have to find a way to release Wharton so he can focus on creating again.

Oh and yeah, he definitely isn't a captain.

Not regularly in the starting XI towards the end of their careers but Delaney, Ward and Tomkins were also leaders.
