A sense of perspective ( or the deluded optimist thread)

I think Glasners motto isn't when the going gets tough the tough gets going, its more like, when the going gets tough, give up and whine. its Frankfurt repeating its self.

Not Glasner's finest moment. Somewhat disingenuous of him to suggest that he doesn't have enough players. It is both a strength and a weakness that he always wants to field the strongest team whether he's playing Arsenal or ateam from the Faroe Islands. Consequently, all but eleven of the squad are severely short of minutes. Uche must have played a combined five minutes all season before coming on on 78 minutes today. Was he supposed to score?

I suppose it might be argued that had more players been signed in the summer he would rotate the squad more, but it's pretty clear he things Esse and Uche are a waste of space.
Honestly I've got the hump with him a bit at the moment. He's gone very public with his views that he wasn't backed when in fact every time he is bought a new player he doesn't use them, or even try to use them.

It's the kids Christmas Party at Selhurst tonight. Always a great evening with players giving their time and turning up. The only difference this year is it is shoe horned in between a ton of games. Will ask my lad to report back on how knackered the players are looking! If we can get through December with some decent results will be very happy!

It’s difficult to keep a sense of perspective after two consecutive miserable defeats against in truth two fairly average teams, but here goes.

1) We have only lost a handful of Premier League games this year which is quite a record.
2) A stat was flashed up on the TV today that only Haaland and Salah has scored more goals than Mateta this calendar year, which is remarkable for a Palace player.
3) I wouldn’t swap our back 3 for any defence in the Premier League.
4) We have the best attacking right back in the league and one of the best goalkeepers.
5) We have one of the best defensive left backs in the league
6) Even in the games that we have lost, we have never been dominated and have always been in games.

With success, expectations rise so inevitably there is some sense of disappointment and anger.
There has been some evidence of this in Glasner who in a very positive way is a sore loser as he expresses in his polite Austrian manner.
There’s not that much wrong that a couple of good results won’t put right.
In isolation, the above sums up where we stand today.

But then you look at the fixture list and the quality as well as the quantity of our squad and the picture changes.

Palace won't be the first club that failed to build on a success and won't be the last. If indeed, that turns out to be the case. And let's face it, our club has previous in this respect.

Just my opinion, but I think there is a lack of alignment between Parish and Glasner. Parish wants Glasner to commit to an extended contract. Glasner wants proof that the club match his ambitions before doing so. Now if you take that in isolation you can see where the problems lie. Without rehashing all of the events of the summer, the net result was a messy transfer window. And it could have been even worse had Parish not performed a Starmer-like U-turn over Guehi. Quite where this takes us come the January window I don't know.

One thing I don't doubt is Glasners commitment to his players. But the signs are currently that of a well running dry. Yes, a couple of good results would get things back on track - starting at Burnley on Wednesday.

I think Glasner has fired his warning shot, I don't expect him to be here next season.

It's clear that the board will not or cannot fund substantial investment in players or rather the players that OG wants.

That is not a bad thing, we have been down the route of Goldberg and it was a disaster so I think we just have to accept that he will go to a club with a bigger budget.

Glasner is the new Messiah. He has already performed many miracles, and he has a lot more disciples than the lowly 12 that Jesus had.
Lets hope Palace don't fck him off.

I think most of us know we’re going to run out of steam, it just might have started a bit earlier than we thought. Once you get passed our best eleven there’s not a lot else and all the extra games was always going to catch up with us with these players playing every game.
But it is what it is, to quote that rather annoying phrase, we’ve just got to battle through it, at least we’ve got some decent points on the board early for a change and we’ve not got much left to do to at least to get into the play off round in Europe. Then hopefully we’ll get a second wind and a couple of new signings in January

We of course have to adhere to the Financial Regulations and our revenue is dwarfed by some other clubs in the PL.
We do not possess a 50,000 capacity stadium with corporate facilities to match.

A very important and underrated player. But if he's not back soon, his career must be in serious jeopardy. Was it a tackle in a Premiership match against Luton of all people that caused the damage/ Willo! You must know the answer to this!
Yes November 2023 he got crocked first time, the same game i beleive where Olise scored that great goal running half way down the pitch and bending in a beauty.

Cheich came back for a few games last year but got crocked again.
Unfortunantely i dont think will ever be the same player Liverpool were interested in and Palace slapped a £60 million pound price tag on.

I think we have done well so far, November we have won 3 drawn 1 and lost 2, I think we will beat Burnley, draw Fulham, beat shelboune, lose City, beat KuPs, draw Leeds, beat Arsenal and draw spurs.

Glasner doesn't manage some players very well ie Esse he has a good start scoring but made an error against Liverpool last season so after bringing him on then substitutes him and then moans about him which has knocked his confidence.

Glasner needs to stop moaning and get on with it, he did say at some stage he works well with a smaller squad so I don't understand why he's moaning, Is he looking for a way out idk?

I like Glasner but he needs to keep it real, we can only attract above average players at the moment so I think come January will get in 1 or 2 players in but they will need time to settle down.
Agreed. He can't have it both ways. He has a small squad (which is what he wants so that bench players get decent opportunities to play).

Furthermore, we did bring in FIVE players in the Summer - yes five players left the club but two of those (Edouard and Schlupp) were out on loan as Glasner didn't want them; One (Holding) was in solitary confinement; one (our club captain, Ward) rarely played. The only real 1st team player to go was Eze.

The squad has been strengthened with the arrival of Pino (£21m+) a regular 1st team player; Canvot (£18m) who is showing he is likely to be a regular in due course; Benitez (no transfer fee) who has looked a decent back-up keeper when called upon; Sosa (£2m) who is yet to prove himself IMO and Uche (potentially £17m) who hasn't been given a decent chance.

I'm wondering whether it was a case of Glasner wanting players who could hit the ground running (he mentioned a couple of missed opportunities in the Summer window).

His outburst on Sunday seems to me to be about having to recognize that he should have been doing more squad rotations over the last couple of months instead of trying to convince people that his cherished 1st XI were fit enough to handle the punishing schedule that lay (and continues to lie) ahead.

It will be interesting to see what changes, other than a replacement for the injured Sarr), he makes for the Burnley game as this will reveal to what extent he's remaining stubborn regarding squad rotation.

Problem isn’t we don’t rotate in games is our inept poor finishing Just reviewing last two games and if we’d converted some relatively easy chances then at 60 mins could have made many changes But we don’t put games to bed and now chasing games in last 30 mins and quality of players not up to this but sure could be set to seeing out a game

We run out of steam after 70 mins.
In the last two games I didn't fancy our chances of equalising.

Bear in mind that last season Mateta was often substituted around 70 mins and there hasn't been that luxury this season.

I haven't seen the stats, but my eyes tell me that Munoz is making nothing like as many lung busting runs recent weeks.

It's a difficult one, because if Glasner says the players are tired it can become a self fulfilling prophecy.

I'm reminded of the great Bill Shankly at Liverpool.
If on the Thursday in training before a weekend game Shankly approached a player saying they looked a 'bit tired' they dreaded it.
They knew it was a preamble to being dropped under the pretext that they needed a rest.

This has been my observation as well.
In the Glasner system, the wing-backs are pivotal in providing the width, yet Munoz has not been making his marauding runs and Mitchell, whilst recognising his defensive prowess, is not a player who excels in the attacking third of the pitch.

12 is a good number, where we finished in the league last season, a massive improvement on past seasons.

Comments filed under 'Tongue in cheek' !

From my perspective, supporters have enjoyed the best period in our history but alas I sense that we have reached our summit and the direction of travel is towards base camp but hopefully not arriving at this destination.

I think both things are true;

Glasner absolutely should have rotated more and has to learn to trust more of his players - he might have problems with Esse's game, but there's just no way an England U21 international who has played 50+ games in the Championship is not able to contribute to games against teams from Cyprus and Ukraine. Aside from the benefit of being able to rest other players, there's also a huge developmental benefit to Esse himself - it's frankly absurd he hasn't had a sniff in any of those games to date, particularly against low blocks.

We've also loaned Rak-Sakyi to some nobody club in Turkey because Glasner doesn't fancy him - exactly the sort of player who can help with the fixture congestion, and more than good enough for the Conference League.

Despite all of that, I and others spent much of the summer highlighting that we had left ourselves exceptionally short, and that reality has now come home to roost. The squad was never close to ready for a full campaign to include Europe, regardless of who the manager is.

We will have brought in a lot of revenue from winning the cup and the shield.

First of all the actual prize-money. Second, a huge uptick in merchandise sales.

Thirdly, we have more games this season, which means more bums in seats, more spent on tickets, more spent in the club shop and the fanzone and the bars in the stadium.

There is also a payout from UEFA for each individual game paid, that’s separate from matchday income.

The club put on those contentious premium packages for France. I know not all of them sold out, but presumably they made a killing on the ones they did sell.

This season and last season should be a lot more profitable than the ones before them. Owing to that, both last summer and this January, you would expect greater spending potential within the FFP framework than previous seasons and than we did see in the Summer.

I think that the Conference Leauge should be the Number 1, target, forget Carabo, forget FA cup, focus on Premier league survival and winning the CL, if we finish 12th and win the CL to gain entry to the EL, then IMO it is a good season.
