16 & 17 year olds to be given the vote

It’s a bad idea.
Purely an exercise to keep Labour in Government for another 5 years.
They argue that if you pay income tax you should be allowed to vote - I wonder what percentage of 16/17 year olds pay tax?!

Expansion of acceptable IDs: UK-issued bank cards will be accepted as voter ID in Great Britain, providing the bank card displays the elector’s name.

Bank cards? So no photo ID will be required?

The SNP introduced this in Scotland to lower the voting age to 16 for the same reason they introduced free bus travel for anyone up to 22 - they see it as a vote catcher.
For me anyone in full time employment at 16 or 17 should get a vote: no taxation without representation but everyone else can wait until they're 18.

What an outrageous decision.

Bits o' kids who are not old enough to buy a beer,
drive a car,
watch a film with sex scenes,
be selected for jury service,
join the army, navy or air force (and lots more).

Just some of the restrictions correctly applied to 16 year olds who, the present government believe, are old enough to decide who should be in control of the country,

When I was 16 I didn't give a f***, and I find it hard to believe that the present lot are any different. A dreadful and desperate vote grabbing ploy.

People tend to start more left wing and drift towards the right as they get more experience of life, and form opinions based on experience and reality rather than idealism. So this is a cynical attempt from the government to sway future elections in its own favour (though probably won't make much difference). I saw Starmer try to claim that this age group is old enough to have a job and pay tax, so they should have the vote. I would love to find out what the tax take is from them, and would venture to suggest it would be close enough to zero as makes no difference. Also, not old enough to have an alcoholic drink, but old enough to make decisions on how the country should be governed - crazy, and appalling.

This is good and a manifesto pledge fulfillled.

Let youth have it's fling, and of course they are much more sensible than the 70+ brexiteer generation.

They may even have morals and principles, clearly intolerable.........
