Marc Guéhi

Over the last few years the club has raised very little by selling players.

Looking at Transfer Market over the last 6 years, Palace have received £181.14m - £150m of that was from the sales of Wan Bissaka, Sorloth, Olise and Andersen.

Over the same period the club spent £324.9m

All the current signs point to the majority of this summers transfer budget being dictated by player sales, specifically Guehi and Eze. And as of this moment we haven't received a penny. Like it or not, that would have an impact on our transfer activity - or should I say lack of. When I flagged this a few weeks ago there were some that dismissed this as just an excuse. Quite why anybody would think that the club were deliberately setting out to upset the manager and not strengthen the squad in readiness for the coming season, I don't know.

I believe the club have been actively looking for players but they have to be the right players and at the right price. I've no doubt that Diomande would have been a good replacement for Guehi. But Guehi's still here and Diomande's release clause is now 80m Euros. Guessand from Nice was another one that got away when Villa effectively gazumped us.

There's no denying that off the field it's been a disappointing summer in many respects.

Now I think we need Guehi and Eze situations sorted so we can move on.

Let's hope we see a positive shift over the next couple of weeks.
I understand the points that you make and will take your word on the figures.

What I do struggle with though, and I raised it on another thread, is that we managed to spend big fees and wages on the likes of Benteke, Sakho and Cabaye around 8 years ago and didn't have to generate large sales to make such purchases which were presumably made within spending rules from the owners' investment.

I accept that we've changed the model to buy young players with a resale value, but this doesn't mean we shouldn't be able to spend as we did when we bought the likes of Benteke etc if we choose to.

Palace are what they are, a small club, with a third rate stand, no oil nation or sugar daddy, but punching massively above their weight, and that can continue if they balance the books, some people might not like that, as Neillo said a deficit of 130m over 6 years, although the Squad is worth 200m more than 3 years ago, and the wage bill has reduced by over 20m over the same period, sadly the 450m squad (transfermkt) is only use when we sell, disappointing but true, this is what Palace is, we can win the Conference League, should be our priority, and finish mid table in the Premier League with a squad without Guehi and Eze, as long as some decent replacements are loaned or bought, with another 2/3 squad players, there is still 18 days, make it happen.

I believe it took us 5/6 years to recover from that outlay, 60+m spent 300k a week wages on them 3, and 5m in return

Well, I'm no Kevin Maguire so all I can do is look at our transfer outgoings v. incomings and go from there ! If I go back just a little further in time then the club have another substancial negative position of around £180m.

Apologies but I should have pointed out the previous figures I quoted were in Euros not £.

I would guess that the deficit is funded though loans and that can have a cumulative effect. But I'm not an accountant and certainly not an expert in the way that clubs are funded.

You are joking aren’t you. We have 3 multi-Billionaire owners and err Steve

Someone posted I can’t recall where that we were about £90m in the black when it comes to money that can feasibly be spent. What we actually have available to spend is more a mystery but as I mentioned above we do have 3 exceptionally rich owners who should they choose and be within the regs fund several large purchases. However it’s unsure whether they are here to invest further or just to sit and watch their initial investment grow

Steve Parish hasn't quite got used to the notion of selling to buy, he extends the contract for a donkey (Benteke), and had the opportunity to cash in on Zaha yet holds onto a player who wanted out and who eventually went for nothing. Edouard back in the squad sums up the clusterfuck perfectly.
I thought his recent words to the media regarding Guehi quite frankly desperate and attention seeking. Now if Guehi does go it'll likely be for less than he's worth or on a free - top work Steve!
12th to 14th place this season and OG to leave at the end of his contract. You read it here first.

That's why I referred to the model changing and it's brought it's rewards.
Eze, Olise, Guehi,Wharton, Lacroix etc worth far more than when they were purchased.

The central point I was making wasn't in relation to the nature of the players purchased, it related to making an investment in the first place.

We were hardly well established 8 years ago, hadn't generated big sales, and yet still purchased 3 players of huge pedigree in Benteke, Sakho and Cabaye.
It's not their merits I was discussing, it was the fact that we were able to make the investment in the first place.

In fact if anything our record on shrewd investments has meant that in general where we've speculated we've accumulated if you look at what the likes of Wharton could fetch in the market.
That should encourage investment if our recent record is anything to go by in shrewd purchases.

We have 3 multi millionaire owners , and provided we operate within the spending rules, it's a shame that there is not more evidence of active support.

I ackowledge it's not my money of course!

there not that rich compared with the oil rich , gone are the days when 500m was a big club money , think totally our ones are worth about 10b between them , Newcastle about 450b lol .
dont what Marc to go but better to sell now or he must sign new contract even 2 years would help , dont think its a slam dunk that he will go , but a very high chance he will go , and goodluck to him

Who can’t pump their money into the team Willy Nilly because of FFP
That wasn’t the point I was responding to. We, like many other teams in the PL, such as Newcastle and Villa have plenty of money in theory but are hamstrung by restrictions, but not to the extent that you can’t spend nothing at all which you would think if you saw our market activity to date.

But they don't, the Saudis have, Johnson, Harris and Blitzer have, but not the clubs, asset rich, cash poor in our case.

I'm sure you would do a much better job.

However, he extended Benteke's contract in order to get a transfer fee for him. Which he duly did.

As for Edouard - we're still paying him, nobody's bought him, are you happy to let him do nothing for his £5m a year ?? That's not me expecting him to come good by the way.

Arsenal tried to nickle and dime us over Zaha ( who was rewarded with a new contract ) and ended up signing Pepe for £72m - that worked out well didn't it. Zaha continued to be instrumental in keeping Palace in the EPL until his contract expired.

His words re Guehi were probably bordering on desperate - he either wants a fee for the player or for Guehi to stay and sign another contract - if he leaves for free next summer, well that's the terms of his contract ! I suppose you think Parish should have just accepted Newcastle's lower offer last season as it's higher than we will get a year later - which is how football works in this context.

12-14th ? Historically that's where we belong although that's clearly not good enough for you anymore.

I'd love to see Glasner stay same as the next man, but another good season with Palace will make him a wanted man anyway.

I think we're rapidly moving to a world where all the best players are hoovered up by a handful of clubs with bloated squads.

Even mega rich Newcastle are struggling to hold on to Isac.

Eze and Guehi are likely to move this summer and we'll probably face similar issues with Wharton and one or two others next summer.
The system is designed to destroy competition and for us we're probably looking at a perennial 12th place, which given our history, is quite an achievement.

Nonetheless, being a fan is all about dreams and aspiration which is why this year has been such a joy with the Wembley wins.

However, the recognition is setting in as this week progresses that this is about as good as it gets for Palace.

We are in the top 10 in the league in terms of ownership wealth but we are in the bottom 6 when it comes to investment. The quality and size of the ground doesn’t help nor does our general policy of not selling to buy.

I have no issue with Guehi going but think it should have been tied up early in the window for around £40m.

Tough one for Guehi, if he goes to Liverpool there’s no guarantee of first team football and may therefore lose his England place for next summer’s tournament? Stay with Palace and it’s more ensured. I would see my contract out if it was me and leave after this season?

Tough one for Palace too.

Marc's only been seriously interested in a move to Liverpool, but as you rightly point out, he's concerned about his playing time in a World Cup season.

That's left Palace in limbo in terms of replacing him and generating transfer funds.

With Konate in the same contract situation at Liverpool, I half expected Guehi to stay for this coming season. Looking less likely now.

Could this be a possible part of the deal, loaning us him for the season as a squad player with Guehi going the other way?
“Meanwhile, Liverpool are also trying to sign 18-year-old Parma centre-back Giovanni Leoni. The Italy Under-19 international is not seen as a potential rival for Guehi but more as one for the future.
He began his career at Padova and had a short spell at Sampdoria before joining Parma last summer”
We would then use the Guehi money to buy a first team replacement?
