16 & 17 year olds to be given the vote

I don’t disagree with you.
But I’ve been employing plasterers since 2001 and have seen a decline in the youngsters , I’m in my 40s with teenagers so not a miserable old c**t.
The main areas I think are a sense of entitlement, poor work ethic (probably due to their parents ), social media and iPhone addiction.

A youngster would have to really have a bit about them for me to start them. I’d like to, but not many about, that I’ve seen.
about 15 yrs ago I was employing in the region of 10 painters & often gave a chance to apprentices.
Common problems were:
going to away evening games.
being a DJ at night during the working week
not coming in if they knew a tough day / deadline was coming.
spliff.

I just run out of patience in the end

Now the government will have to spend billions developing an app so they can all vote by iPhone.......
Because they won't recognise a paper ballot slip or know wtf a pencil is 😁

ultimately any age limit is a little arbitrary.

At 18 you are still a teenager and have limited life experience so not sure dropping it by 2 years makes much difference. If you work and pay tax at 16 maybe it's a good thing.

Supposedly only 18% of 16/17 year olds say they will vote anyway so it won't make a massive difference either way.

I suspect there are a lot of 40 year olds who i won't trust with a vote, but that's life.

As I posted somewhere else, I think Starmer may find this backfires. The majority of 16 yr olds are quite conservative now. They would likely vote for Reform in my opinion. My 16yr old is disgusted with my drinking and smoking. He also thinks all the trans and diversity stuff is bollocks. When you consider it, it's been shoved down their throats throughout school. The actual rebellion these days would be to be anti what you have been indoctrinated with.
Plus your other Alf Garnett traits. Tory leaning children should pay a living wage rent as they like free markets not being hindered.

The adults are getting increasingly pi553d off with the malfunctioning parliamentary system, and the politicians that gorge from the public money pit.

Indoctrinate the youngsters that the current political system is worth saving, and nip the civil unrest before it spreads.

Teach them to conform and not put hurty words on the internet

My beef is that we are all over the place with the age of maturity.

I agree that any age restriction by definition is arbitrary however 18 seems a reasonable age to vote / drink/ serve in the military and any other number of adult things.

The justice system treats anyone under 18 as a child but Labour want them to vote.

Personally I would stick with 18 as the age of adulthood and rationalise most other age restrictions to that number.

it's not just Labour. Scotland already has reduced the voting age to 16 so it is just a question of when, not if, the rest of the UK moves to 16.

If you can work full time and pay tax at 16 then surely you can vote.

I agree we are all over the place with age limits though - you can drive a moped at 16 and a car at 17, for example.

At least the minimum age to get married has been changed to 18. It always seemed a bit odd that you could be approaching your second anniversary and have a child before being allowed to see a Bruce Lee film or buy a pint. Legally anyway.

I'm surprised there hasn't been more outrage about this.

This is one of the most cynical moves by any government ever.

Socialists trying to get votes from kids who are still dumb enough to buy their idealistic nonsense.

I hope none of the school uniforms includes a brown shirt. That could be a suggestion of political bias

The Islamic vote. If they're old enough for sex at 12, then they should also be able to vote.
Unless they are girls. Girls are forbidden to vote. Ever.

yes, but 16 year olds don't work and pay tax.

I believe all non taxpaying types shouldnt get to vote & decide how the cake is divided. Considering their contribution to said cake is zero. Non taxpayers of all ages, genders, & religions.

You can work and pay tax at 16 it's just most of them wont go over the threshold to earn enough to do so.

Who is getting to vote that does not contribute tax? Only students who are studying if not working can't think of anyone else.

You must be thinking of other countries.

Correct. Its up there with 'renta crowd' or the Tony Blair maxim of importing a new cohort of Labour voters.

the uk has tons of scroungers........ Cant work, wont work, couldnt be bothered etc.

So now you are attacking unemployed or people who are too sick to work.

Go away you have no clue what you talking about and clearly have no understanding how the system works.

Back to the subject this thread is about which is for minors to vote they are not by law adults so no they should not be allowed to vote. (This is such a desperate govt they will do anything they attacked elderly so wont get that vote so now got to resort to this hoping it will save them if it doesn't it messes up the next one that comes in after)
