As I posted somewhere else, I think Starmer may find this backfires. The majority of 16 yr olds are quite conservative now. They would likely vote for Reform in my opinion. My 16yr old is disgusted with my drinking and smoking. He also thinks all the trans and diversity stuff is bollocks. When you consider it, it's been shoved down their throats throughout school. The actual rebellion these days would be to be anti what you have been indoctrinated with.

Is how long then after they’ve got the vote does the arguement for a levelling of minimum wage to get started.

If you’re old enough to vote, you’re old enough to receive the same wage as someone older doing the same job

Actually I have never agreed with a lower minimum wage for young people for the reason you have just stated. As for the so called apprenticeships it's often just an excuse for cheap labour with some BS management course tacked on.

We need to bring back proper apprenticeships such as plumbers, electricians etc. We can do this through the tax system penalising those companies that don't. The government is a massive procurer e.g. roads bridges HS2 etc. Do not allow companies to bid for contracts unless they have a proper apprenticeship scheme with recognised portable skills.

Don’t have the work ethic to work in the building trade/apprenticeships.
If a company was allowed to put mobile phones in lockers at the start of the day and return them to apprentices at the end of the day (I’m sure this would be against their human rights ) then we’d have a chance.
I’ve just started a 23 year old , was put off by his age , but his circumstances (1 kid and 1 on the way) , swayed me to think that he would be in everyday.
In a world with social media and influencers are swanning around the world having glamorous life styles. It’s hard for a teenager to want to get up in the dark, make their own way to work, graft for 8 hours and make their way home.

I don’t disagree with you.
But I’ve been employing plasterers since 2001 and have seen a decline in the youngsters , I’m in my 40s with teenagers so not a miserable old c**t.
The main areas I think are a sense of entitlement, poor work ethic (probably due to their parents ), social media and iPhone addiction.

A youngster would have to really have a bit about them for me to start them. I’d like to, but not many about, that I’ve seen.

The politicians will never do it but they need to make it easier to sack people like the USA. The reason their economy "can" grow so quickly is that firms will hire people because they are not concerned about laying them off if they need to.

In this country we protect the workers which means that firms will think twice before hiring, another roadblock for employment.

I know from experience it's almost impossible to sack someone for being lazy or just not good enough. As long as they don't do anything stupid they are bullet proof. You would have to show the tribunal that you have done everything to assist the person from extra training to changing their job and even then it is likely they will find in the employees favour.

Personally I would bring in a no fault release scheme. An employee could be released with fixed compensation without having to provide a reason or justification. This would not go against their work record.

They wont do it but it would invigorate our workforce the lazy would be got rid of or buck their ideas up.

I doubt they'll remember much past about four minutes beforehand. Some, not even that. Although there will be exceptions. They certainly never remember being asked to do stuff around the house or walk the dog.
