Live Aid - Was it really 40 Years Ago?

Last night I watched the first two installments of Live Aid - 40 Years On.

It was well produced by the Beeb and Geldof talked in his usual eloquent style about how he started the ball rolling and then how he fought hard to raise millions of pounds to help relief for the famine in Ethiopia. Geldof's efforts clearly saved millions of lives.

It's on the iPlayer and I thoroughly recommend watching it as a reminder of the mammoth exercise the whole thing was, from the single 45 to a multi country satellite rock show. Some good, but too brief, examples of the music too. It'd be good to know if any HOLers actually went to the concert.

My lady friend has no interest in music and yet:

When she was a teen in Australia saw the Beatles.

Saw Elvis in Las Vegas

Went to Live Aid (Boyfriend got tickets).

How lucky can you get.

I didn't go to this as i was running a pub in Northampton at the time. Went to Live8. Had TV's in the bars & did fundraising things going n all day & night. Even got granted extended opening hours. Great day/night & great fun.

‘’Don’t go to the pub tonight. Give us your money’’

First sentence you won’t hear much of these days because pubs are empty or closed.

I heard a lot of that Live Aid money went to warlords.

I'm sure some did get creamed off Stirling, but from the messages coming across in the programme it sounded like Geldof and his crew managed to ensure that the vast majority went into the food and medicine etc which was the aim.

The film did make it clear that civil wars were ongoing and these, supported by Russia, were the cause of much of the trouble.

I heard it was more like, some of it went to aid, but most didn't.

Live Aid's success meant many of the artists made money. This led to a plethora of concerts with people jumping on the charity bandwagon as a career move.

A pity because I like to think that those who took part in Live Aid were genuine.

By the time it got to Aid Aid.....I suspected something was up.

If anyone's interested, tonight bbc2 @ 18.00 are showing the whole concert in 2 parts, pt2 follows pt1 straight after.
Yeah, I've set the Record button. I know I started this thread, but having watched all 3 episodes of the BBC documentary about how Geldof developed the whole project, I have to say it was very well produced and makes great television.

I thoroughly recommend catching it on iPlayer, especially if you weren't old enough to understand what was going on at the time.
