I know my example was extreme, but the point is players are in the team to do a certain job. Yes sometimes depending on who you’re playing, how a game is going, if you’re under the cosh, down to 10 men, holding on to a lead etc, players are asked to do something else. But Bayern didn’t sign Olise from us for his tackling ability, we didn’t sign LaCroix for his finishing in front of goal etc etc, so I just thought it was unfair to put stats up showing that Eze didn’t do a single tackle in a game.
Scored the biggest goal in our history, but let’s criticise him for not putting the tackles in??
Of course players have different roles - surely that doesn’t even need saying.
Obviously Bayern didn’t sign Olise for his tackling, but they undeniably would’ve considered his defensive contributions, off the ball work rate, positional play etc. when they scouted him - are you trying to suggest they don’t?
Similarly, no we didn’t sign Lacroix for his shooting ability, but as well as scouting how good a defender he is, we would’ve also had a lot of consideration on his ability on the ball, passing quality, decision making etc.
The higher up the chain you go, the more rounded the players tend to be.
Its a discussion about where we think Eze may end up if he leaves - we can all just say Real Madrid because he scored a winner in a cup final if you want, but it would be a rather pointless discussion.
I don't get this weird sort of fanboying where we just pretend all of our players are perfect and immune from a discussion about their weaknesses - I love Eze, I think he's one of the most talented players we've ever had and he scored the biggest goal in our history. On top of that, he seems a thoroughly decent person - he's an absolute credit to the club...
But I don't think he's quite rounded enough to play for an elite club for the reasons highlighted... hopefully I can still consider myself a Palace fan!
