Manchester City vs. Crystal Palace match thread

Just back from sunny Morocco so fortunately missed yesterday’s game. Having scrolled through 18 pages of comments I’m wishing I was still on holiday. As far as I can tell we started really well then Kevin de Bruyne decided to have his best game of the season while we sat back and forgot to press. Our defence was not its usual tidy self without Guehi. Mateta wasn’t seeing anything of the ball so Ollie decided to try something different to gain control in midfield. That didn’t work and we got pumped. It happens. Move on.

Believe you me, most of us wish we could unsee it. You're lucky.

Did you see our defence on the beach with you? 🤣🤣

Why then did we have to sit through three VAR checks for offside following Eze’s second goal and two of Man City’s goals?! The ball was back on the centre spot with the re-start significantly delayed whilst VAR checked for offside. If it’s semi-automated, faster and as good as goal line tech it would have been judged almost instantly.
Apparently, it's the first time that it's ever been used in a match, so possibly they were making sure that it was working properly under match conditions, hence the use of VAR as a belt & braces check.

There was ‘one’ positive yesterday…..

His name was ‘Matheus França’

When he got the ball, he always looked to attack City and boy, he has some great skills and speed.

It won’t happen, but I’d love to see him get a few starts under his belt before the semi final.

Others will disagree, but perhaps a good opportunity to try something different??

I’m still not convinced as to how accurate it is but hey ho
Well, seemingly if Eze had cut his toenails before the game, he'd have been onside..........

Seriously, the graphics certainly look better than the VAR ones, and according to that it was literally only his toes that were offside - it draws a line across the furthest forward bit of the defender and then 'swings round' to the traditional 'linesman's' view across the pitch with a very fine line.

I agree actually, from what we’ve seen of his recent cameo’s he looks a lot more like he’s up to the job now. He looked like a little boy lost and a bit erratic when we we see him briefly when we first signed him. Physically he looks so much better now as well

When we were 2-0 up I thought Glasner was a tactical genius, but seeing what he did at half time just made him look like he'd lost the plot.

I like Glasner, but to single out Mateta isn't fair. I get that Mateta wasn't at his best, that him, Hughes and Lacroix weren't fully fit and that we didn't have a ready made sub available with Nketiah being suspended, but honestly, what was he thinking by reducing our attacking threat? You can't defend wave after wave of attacks against a team like Man City (as we saw!) and surely you need an outlet to try and carry the ball up the pitch, get corners, etc.

Couldn't understand why the obvious sub of Hughes for Kamada didn't happen at half time. Kamada looked better last week, but completely out of his depth yesterday. The free kick he gave away was sloppy and if Hughes or Wharton had done it I would have probably just shrugged my shoulders, but Kamada hasn't earned enough credit in the bank for that. He's got to drop him to the bench as apart from a couple of decent passes in previous games, I just don't think he's adding anything to the team. I can only think that Glasner has rose tinted glasses on with him, as surely it would have been better to start with Hughes with the view of subbing him off when he was knakered.

Still, as annoying the result is at least we don't have the pressure of keeping that run going now and we've got a our bi-annual big loss out of the way!

He was but as the ball wasn’t passed to him, he is deemed not involved in play. Only when the cross comes into the box does he become involved. And he was onside then. So all good. 👍🏻

Such a shame he didn’t stay onside for the third goal as he could clearly see the defenders in front of him.

It was completely needless and lazy. It should’ve been 3-0 and their players and crowd looked completely deflated. The VAR decision gave City the lift they needed and before you knew it Kamada had committed the foul and KdB had scored the free kick. The rest, as they say, is history.

So frustrating.

Never knew that before.
Cheers Buzz

A lot of people are mentioning moment of Mateta and Hughes having a go a Kamada. I missed that. Anywhere I can see that moment?
Sorry I can't help, but Mateta has been a big supporter of Kamada, leading the celebration when Kamada scored and trying to boost his confidence. Perhaps they're close, and JP simply felt Kamada needed some strong words in the moment. Sort of a tough-love approach?
