Manchester City vs. Crystal Palace match thread

Second half they didn't compete at all. I can only imagine that they are preparing, subconsciously or otherwise, for the semi final. I also suspect that OG is formulating his side for that very game.
Note that we are 12th, Roy and PV achieved the same, so the Cup is the big one.
I'd be amazed and shocked if Kamada starts the semi final if others are available. That said, our midfield lacks depth and overall quality and is an area for improvement.
I’ll be shocked if he doesn’t start in the semi. For me start Hughes and Lerma in those 2 spots. Yes that would mean benching Wharton at this moment in time.

first 30 minutes palace were electric. Should have had a 3rd if either eye could manage off-side or saar had his shooting boots on. But we were playing City. They have exceptional players. Then Henderson got the wall all wrong for a free kick Kamada should never have conceded. City had momentum and all the bounces went for them. Too many palace players had off days. Kamada sadly is not top level premier league player and a liability against top opposition. Devanney is better. Wharton was not influential. A very disappointing day in the end as city rolled over us. Looking for full 90 minutes vs Newcastle on Wednesday night . With Hughes back.

I agree with what you are saying although I think Kamada has improved a lot and was better than Wharton over recent games.
Regards Hughes this link shows what we missed against city from the last game. Glasner made a tactical error 2nd half but I’d rather we learn that lesson now than the fa cup semi or potential final

I watched the game again or rather the highlights. I’m not sure how we went from what we were to what we ended as. Amazing what confidence can do, 2-0 up we looked like we could take on PSG. They score and we look like a vierra team on a bad day. Madness.

Kamadas pathetic slide tackle (which I wish had been a red) was absolutely the turning point but we should have gone in 1-2 at half time. With Hughes alongside Wharton, I’m convinced we would not have folded like a cheap suit and given them a level game to start the 2nd half with.

As for the 2nd half, that was embarrassing. We made old man Kevin look like the player he was 5 years ago… only Palace. As for the match of the day Kevin love in… they can f*** off. We made him look good because Wharton and Kamakzi couldn’t lay a glove on him.

Do not understand why JPM was taken off. Can only think that as we are safe OG is trying different things in case we manage to come up against city in the cup final.

Still fuming but what can you do.

Wharton absolutely needs Hughesy alongside him, they complement each other. Wharton does the pretty stuff and hopefully stays out of trouble while Hughesy gets stuck in and breaks up the opposing play.

It was a classic case of an inept tackle by a clueless Kamada, and a disastrous tactical decision by Glasner, the case was both defensives played poorly, the wall, and Henderson positioning, with Mateta, Sarr, Richards and Lacroix in the wall and jumping at delivery, also Eze on the ground, it would have taken a hell of a freekick to get the ball up an down with pace, Henderson covering the other side, he wouldn't have scored the way he did, and it was 2-2 at half time, still goals in both teams, but the ridiculous decision to take Mateta of handed them the game, Glasner saying that it was the formation change that was his mistake not taking JP off, don't the two go hand in hand, Disappointing.

I agree that Wharton and Hughes look to be the our most effective midfield partnership in terms of combination play and retaining possession, and each seem to have an instinctive understanding where the other is on the field.
They look to be our most effective midfield partnership in terms of getting the getting the rest of the team to function.
With injuries and suspensions we’ve not been able to field them together as much this season.
Ideally you’d want Lerma in there too with his physicality and all round game, but that would entail changing the team shape which won’t happen.

Kamada is not the reason that we lost the game but he is the Manager's Achilles heel.
He is just not good enough at this level.
He is weak and makes very poor decisions when tackling.
If however he cannot see that, then maybe he needs to be told!
He should be bench at best or given away if possible.
With Lerma in the back line, we need bite in midfield and he does not provide that.
Very bad day at the office against a team who still can be very good, as we saw yesterday.

From OG's post match interview:
"We didn't defend on our top level"
"They find the pockets, they find the space"
Yes this is so, but it is OG's game plan and team selection that enables it. A non combative midfield cedes the run of play entirely to the opposition, I have said this time and again - without the necessary steel in that area we are prone to rolling over against quality like KdB.
Given that Glasner isn't about to change his formation any time soon, we lack depth when Wharton and Hughes are out and so he shuffles Kamada in to do a job he isn't capable of doing, consequently he gets criticized. Understandable when you're earning in a week what the average Joe takes 4 years to earn.
We lack in this area.

I was highly surprised that Kamada wasn't hooked at half time.

After, by his standards, a decent performance against Brighton, yesterday he reverted to type. He clearly can't tackle and when he does he regularly mistimes them. City were creating chances in the game but to hand them a gift of a free kick in that position was a turning point.

We all know that we don't have strength in depth in the squad so playing Richards and Lacroix, if they haven't been training properly, is not ideal but with Guehi also out OG had little option.

I'm not going to be too critical of the manager or the players. They've had a phenomenal 2025 so far and yesterday could have been another big away day at 2-0 up. What I don't want is for the team to be going into the semi final on the back of a series of losses. And given the fixtures that is entirely possible.

Devenny has looked a neat and tidy player and must be wondering when he'll get a proper chance. He's 21 so not exactly on his last legs but he isn't a 16 year old either.

I managed to find a positive from yesterday - we scored from another set piece.
We are top scorers from set pieces in the Premier League this season, which is a remarkable turnaround from Roy's last season when our set pieces consisted of chipping the ball into the opposition keepers' hands.
All credit to Glasner, the coaching staff and the players for this dramatic change.Screenshot_20250413_093816_BBC Sport.webp

100% it will be bang on, and faster. It's basically as good as goal line tech. About time.
Why then did we have to sit through three VAR checks for offside following Eze’s second goal and two of Man City’s goals?! The ball was back on the centre spot with the re-start significantly delayed whilst VAR checked for offside. If it’s semi-automated, faster and as good as goal line tech it would have been judged almost instantly.

Probably because they have to do a badge check as well so they don’t upset their top teams.

Henderson in my view was always class and better that Johnstone but he had detractors because Johnstone was decent.

Kamada is not unlucky, he HAS had a run in the side and was total shite. A sub appearance with improvement, and a start with improvement, but it was a low bar. Hughes is much much better.
I perused the article below apropos his tenure at Eintracht Frankfurt :

"Kamada has made 170 appearances for the Eagles to date across all competitions, scoring 37 goals and registering 31 assists. The 26-year-old has 18 goals and 27 assists in 119 Bundesliga outings, but he has tended to save his best performances for the European stage: in 38 continental appearances, Kamada has scored 14 and set up a further four goals. The attacker was also part of the Eintracht side that won the DFB Cup in 2018 before helping the Eagles to UEFA Europa League glory in 2022 "

Kamada has received brickbats from supporters but I recall his exquisite pass to Eze down the left which culminated in the goal for Munoz against Ipswich, and his pass to Nketiah at Fulham which proceeded our third goal.

With this new VAR, I do not understand why Eze was not OFFSIDE for our first goal. In my world, he looked miles off when the ball was played to Sarr.
I have decided i no longer understand the offside rules.
Can anyone explain this?
For Eze 2nd goal he looked ONSIDE, but i am giving that one to the new VAR.

He was but as the ball wasn’t passed to him, he is deemed not involved in play. Only when the cross comes into the box does he become involved. And he was onside then. So all good. 👍🏻

Such a shame he didn’t stay inside for the third goal as he could clearly see the defenders in front of him.

My positive is I’d sooner get beat like that than the turgid stuff under Roy, sit behind the ball(park the bus) and watch the other team passing it around before we still end up losing with hardly an effort on goal, and yes I know Roy won at the etihad, I’m talking about in general most of the time.
Yes we collapsed yesterday and it was a bit of a worry how poor we looked in the end, but at least we had a go and out played them for 25 minutes and who knows if Eze was not given offside and we’d gone 3 up or even if kamada hadn’t dived in like a kamakazi pilot and given that free kick away and we could’ve kept them out a bit longer, that definitely gave them a massive lift
All ifs and buts I know, but we know we can cause teams problems on our day the way we play, yesterday was just one of those days
