US Politics

I certainly respect your take on the current tariff trade disruption but my view differs on who you thought blinked first!

Having listened to comments coming out of the UK/EU and others I think the blinking started last week.

You may be right, you usually are,
I think the UK/EU and many others are just being pragmatic. They know a trade war benefits no one, so are holding back and trying to minimise the damage. What they do in public and say and plan in private are likely to be very different.

The real damage is the destruction of decades of trust that will take at least until 2029 to be restored. With this level of uncertainty planning is impossible so new trading arrangements are likely to emerge, in which the USA is not involved.

How China handle this is more difficult to predict. They won’t though be bullied and have much greater capacity to weather a storm than the USA. They can deal with protests swiftly. I am much more impressed with China’s quiet diplomatic dignity than I am with Trump’s bluster and suspect that so too is the rest of the world. Which isn’t a good look for the USA or the western countries.

Are you suffering buyers regret yet?

And if their quiet diplomatic dignity doesn't work they can always unleash another virus to follow Asian flu, Hong Kong flu, Bird flu, SARS and Covid.

Not at all... it is playing out as I thought. I will revisit this question in a year or so as that is probably a meaningful time to make conclusions and judgements.

I'll concede that I would have liked some subjects to have been handled differently, not necessarily the outcome but certainly the delivery.

I don't believe your statement that the rest of the world will side with China will ultimately hold water but again let's wait 12 months and revisit that one too.

His praising of China has got to be his most bizarre opinion to date. Not only that but he mentions their ability to deal with protests swiftly. Ah yes, years in prison. Just what everyone in the west agrees with.

I didn’t suggest the rest of the world would side with China. Only that their calm and measured behaviour is more impressive than Trump’s impulsiveness and unpredictability.

They look like the adult in the room whilst Trump looks just like the spoilt brat he is at heart.

Not only that but when you consider China's own trade practices and restrictions to their markets....the authoritarianism in regards to their own citizens.....Well.

The levels of TDS are 'chef's kiss' worthy.

praise indeed - so much so that he increased tariffs to 125%.
He was about to bust the dollar and suspect he finally listened to someone with some sense. The federal bank stepping in would have been a massive vote of no confidence.
He bottled it.

I wasn’t defending their system. I was merely pointing out that because it exists they can handle protests more effectively than can the USA. There is therefore less risk of social unrest in China as a consequence of a trade war than there is in the USA.

Once again you completely misrepresent what was said.

There was no defence of their system. Just an appraisal of its capacity to control social unrest when compared to the USA and its consequential ability to withstand a trade war.

You don’t have to agree with a system to acknowledge how it can offer benefits. Or recognise that those in control are responding in a calm, dignified way. Which is in total contrast to their adversaries.

Don't worry your awards for condescension and denial are safe.
Where, in your expert opinion, did those viruses originate?
As any such awards would have been refused it’s just as well they weren’t offered!

I don’t know. Any more than anyone else here does. Natural mutations occur. They have in the past well before bio labs existed and in these days of widespread travel the potential for rapid spread is much greater. They could have been lab leaks, either accidental or deliberate. Who might leak deliberately is just speculation. There are many potential candidates. We don’t know and probably never will.
