Internationals

not my decision, but my point really was that this looks like a remarkably similar squad including out of form and underwhelming players. not sure what the back 4 will be, with no left side, no DM(maybe where JH comes in, and Rice to be played there again) or indeed where the invention comes from.

I guess it's all down to how Tuchel utilises them; there are some exciting players in there...lets hope he plays them, where Southgate did not.

Yeah I know. I was just trying to open the chat up.

IMO Gareths main issue was though the middle of the park. And trying to squeeze players in vs picking a balanced team. Trying TAA as the number 6, bringing Foden in and pushing Bellingham back etc.

IF we are going to play 3 in the middle (a 6, 8 and 10). Rice HAS to be the 8 (where he's excelled this season), Jude HAS to the 10. And we are left with the same issue as the summer.

So whilst JH is pretty uninspiring, I can only presume that his job is to come in and allow the others to play

GS's Tenure could be split into 1)Pre Euro2004 where generally he did OK, selected a decent enough squad but got BrainFarts at the big moments in big matches. and 2) Euro2004 where the Brainfarts happened at Squad Selection, and left him without any decent options.

Another issue GS had to cope with, and I don't know if this is endemic of England players atm, but there is no DM available, so we waste Rice and or Bellingham in that position. There's a David Batty sized hole in the squad, who I have no idea who to put there. Hughes is probably our best option, but I reckon he'd be a very unpopular pick, but got to be better than Henderson!?

incidentally I'm amazed Morgan G-W has missed out.

Re Wharton, Tuchel said something about him training with the senior squad first and then going to the U21s to play. If there is no injury outcome, this might be the best outcome as he will have the chance to show he is the best option at No 6 in training and then get plenty of minutes against what may be tougher opponents in U-21 France and Portugal than the senior teams of Albania and Latvia.
Of course, Carsley isn't a fan, so maybe he will be stuck on the bench anyways

Do you think that maybe Tuchel and Glasner have arranged a plan for Wharton? I can see how it would be good for him to be around the main squad with the new manager but he also needs some more match sharpness, obviously Tuchel can’t give him that time in a qualifying game at the moment.

Universal opinion.

Ps I love the idea of Hughes getting a call up and am profoundly glad he was not.

Not a bad notion. Ollie is a canny operator and he probably gets on well with Tuchel. They seem similar types to me.

Normally internationals hold little interest.

However the U21s could be a good chance to see Wharton playing with Jobe Bellingham or Hayden Hackney (both of which we've been linked to).

Really exciting games against Albania and Latvia coming up. Literally can't wait.
Henderson hanging around in midfield with rainbow 🌈 laces. A right back with more divorces than assists at left back. Harry Kane looking like he's done his back in - "he has now!" A one nil penalty win for England. All that nostalgia.
It's akin to those red nose day matches.

You could well be right there, Mr R, they do seem a better game to watch. Thankfully, for me, i've got 'egg-chasing' on in the East Midlands derby, Saints v Tigers.

All 3 England squad members on the bench for Albania. Probably a good thing for us, much less likely to get hurt sitting down.
It’s objectively bonkers to pick Dan Burn and Konsa over Guehi but glad they have. Also weird to pick Foden and Rashford ahead of Gordon but there you go

Is it me, or does Tuchel's team look no different, or better, than Southgate's?

It's not exactly a thrilling game of fast, attacking football.
