Posting this here rather than in the match thread.
Genuine question for all the Sage-in supporters. Can somebody honestly explain something to me?
Putting aside the fact that recruitment hasn’t been particularly strong, why do we persist with exactly the same system, game after game, when it so clearly isn’t working?
Look at Hoffenheim. They managed to go from one end of the pitch to the other almost unchallenged. Our full-backs are too high, our defenders dive in, and enormous gaps open up behind them. We’ve all identified this as a problem, yet somehow our esteemed French coach apparently hasn’t.
Surely the first thing you do when you haven’t got the players to execute your preferred system is make yourselves difficult to beat? Lock it down. Keep your shape. Perhaps, as a revolutionary tactical innovation, try not conceding in the first 20 minutes.
Instead, we go hell for leather up the pitch, lose possession and ten seconds later we’re picking the ball out of our own net. And it’s hardly an isolated incident.
The alternative isn’t much better. When we do sit deeper, any opposition free kick around our box becomes an invitation to score. Our back post is more welcoming than the average brothel.
So this is my genuine question to those who still support Sage.
If you haven’t got the tools at your disposal to play fast, expansive football, why are you insisting on doing it? Why are the full-backs constantly pushed so high? Why persist with zonal marking when we clearly can’t execute it? And why, when the same defensive problems occur every single week, does absolutely nothing change?
Surely the first priority is to stop conceding goals?
I genuinely don’t think Sage knows how to set a team up to shut a game down. He appears to have one approach, and if it doesn’t work, the solution is simply to try it again.
We’re making a side sitting 12th in the German league, and with no disrespect to German football, look like prime Brazil at times. The uncomfortable truth is that some of the points we’ve picked up this season have owed considerably more to the opposition being bloody awful than anything we’ve done particularly well.
For me, this experiment has failed.
The only reason I wouldn’t make a change immediately is that I wouldn’t particularly fancy throwing a new manager into Sunday’s game against Liverpool. Frankly, I can see them putting seven or eight past us if we approach it in the same way.
There is, however, one saving grace.
I’ve been betting on Palace to concede inside the first ten minutes for the last ten games, and financially speaking, Sage is proving to be one of the finest managers I’ve ever encountered.
