Tottenham vs. Crystal Palace match thread

I've just re-watched a Youtube clip at normal speed, both the defenders are in his peripheral vision. He lunged and caught his achilles tendon with his studs, which I assume is why the ref gave a red.

I can't find it now but there was an angle from behind the Tottenham goal where you could see that he didn't know Van Der Ven was there when he took off.

He was trying to knock the ball out to the right where i think mingueza was running to. He also slightly bends his knee to retract his foot and soften the blow as he realises van der ven was there.

although i understand why they gave a red i do also think three game ban is excessive.

Glenn Hoddle made the point that games are played in real time, not slow motion. By reviewing the incident in slow motion it totally distorts what happened in real time. I thought the booking was a bit harsh but in slow motion it looks like an assault.

Agree, it was a bad tackle but in real time he was a fraction late and as has been mentioned may not have seen the player he fouled. Also, VAR said his studs were raised, well when you stretch forward it is physically impossible not to do so without raised studs.
The fact that his foot was quite low was sufficient, i hoped, to keep it to a yellow but the moment they slowed it down i knew he would be off.

Then the next day i see a young Liverpool player do a similar challenge in the 1st minute and not even get booked.

But, of course - you can't spoil a game between two big teams being watched by tens of millions around the world - it's not cricket.

I do not view the two challenges as identical.
Apropos referees not awarding early yellow cards :

I have responded to the comments, I believe this debate centred on the Tottenham game should not be de-railed by a discussion concerning refereeing in general.

I have a lot of sympathy for the appeal case. To me, much the same argument was clear at the time.

Palace had a counter attack opportunity with a player sprinting into acres of space on the right if Mateta could poke the ball onwards into that space. The pass was played behind him, so he spun around and threw himself towards it in the hope of getting that touch. He didn't see Van Der Ven coming at the moment he launched himself.

I can see why they decided red, but to me Mateta was unlucky overall. The really irritating thing is that the best ref we have, who was up with play, aware of the context, and had a feel for events up close, thought a yellow was sufficient. Once VAR gets involved he's never going to overrule them, but VAR pays no attention to context, intent, or anything else in the real world, only close up slow motion replays.
Yep find the angle to validate what you believe and slow down. Hey presto sending off

Or, use every angle necessary to detect some technical infringment but under no circumstances watch it back in real time or in any sort of context.

What var has done is to both highlight and exacerbate this mindset amongst referees that it's all about the letter of the law and not remotely about the spirit of the game.

I watched the game in the pub having been to the welling game in the afternoon, so I had been on the razzle for a while, I thought Van de Ven went down theatrically to make a real meal of it - my first thought was he was trying to get his revenge because he got sent off for dragging Sarr back & conceding the penalty in that game when we won 1.3 at the end of last season.

Getting JP sent off (with no Sarr on the pitch this time & out JSL injured) both makes our attack almost toothless & free,s the Spurs defenders to do pretty much whatever they want for the rest of the game -

It was certainly game over once we went down to ten, at least as a proper contest, anyway. Even if we had held out for a nil nil, it would have been attack against defence for 70 minutes, rather than a proper game.

Not that VAR gives a f*** about all the people that paid to watch a proper game. I totally get that the instinct to manage the event can't get in the way of upholding the rules, but a common sense approach would have considered the effect of an early red on the contest, and whether the foul was really that bad to justify killing the game.

It definitely was not a malicious tackle, it was just a striker’s attempt to get a toe on the ball and was never likely to create a serious injury. However, it translates into a serious consequence for Palace.

Like Madley in the big Sunday afternoon game?

Sadly all somewhat irrelevant now. Deliberate (which i'm sure it was not) or not; studs showing, ankle, lunge = rec card. The fact that Van der Ven made a circus out of it is hardly surprising as that is where we unfortunately are in football these days. How many time per match is a player brushed on the chest and collapses holding his face, rolling over and thumping the turf. It makes me wonder what of todays pampered millionaires whould do if caught by a deliberate Chopper Harris flying tackle (for those that remember football in the 60' & 70's). Now that would be funny.
