Crystal Palace vs. Newcastle match thread

That was just a kick off routine, no? Its in fashion again now to pass it back to the goalie for him to boot it up towards a charging mass on one wing, rugby style.

Andy Gray used to do something similar in the early 90s you might recall, except he'd boot it half way up the Arthur!

I can't work out whether we did anything different in the second half in terms of set up, or if Newcastle just finally had a couple of decent attacks.
I recall going to to a Q&A with Coppell and he was asked why Gray did this.
He said it was a deliberate tactic to force the opposition deep into their own half from the outset, and also to allow our players to get into organised positions for the restart.

1st goal , that cross was perfect , any player touching hit a very good chance of it going in . 2nd one Wharton was awful feel over slow getting up and not pick up the runner . Realistically that was the only real threat they did all match .
It was awful football by both sides . And to top it all we shutdown down for 10 minutes after the 2nd before we started pushing them back . How to motivate this lot good luck who ever is in charge.
1st half good first 10 mins of the 2nd awful. The only plus was osorio .
When Mateta come off we had no threat , even if it was Larsen at least he may have kept them busy

What the chairman who has seen us achieve 13 consecutive years of PL football and trophies is the problem. Your a joker
Your the joker if you cannot see - how much he has let us down by trying to replace Guehi and Lacroix with 2 loans and a sick note free transfer.

Consequently we can’t defend for toffee and have the worst defensive record in the league.

Costing us game after game, week after week - that’s all on Parish..!!

Yes, playing for position rather than possession. Turn them around and box them in. That sort of thing.

At the time, though, I was a kid and the people around me in the main stand seemed genuinely to believe that Gray was trying to pick out Salako or Barber or whoever on the wing. 'Oh dear, overhit it again! One day he'll get it right!' they'd all chuckle....

The second half is like chalk and cheese from the first half, which is inexplicable as we looked comfortable in the first.
It doesn't matter if you have a back 3 or a back 4, you have to have some protection in front of them, and you have to play with heart and self belief.
We can't change the squad so I expect the manager to change in an attempt to turn things around.
Kamada and Wharton turned invisible, which wasn't surprising after a tiring game in Turkey on Thursday. They're exceptionally skilled, but short on stamina. Losing tireless players like LaCroix and Munoz really hurts us when we play twice a week.

It was a good cross (so they are possible) but the goal came from the back three yet again being pulled out of shape. Canvot had to come out to left back where he did a very poor job of closing down the cross. That left the back three unbalanced and Richards and Disasi disorganised which meant nobody tracked the runner. Poor individual play from the back three but also an issue with the formation and tactics. Same thing we’ve seen all season long.

Now I am not accusing anyone of anything but this was also the era when players were allowed to bet on things like the time of the first throw in ..,

That was a performance identical to those previously after a Euro game - start brightly then tire and fade, and the other team takes advantage. But don't worry. so many thought that a transfer window full of frees, loans and sick notes to pad out the squad was good enough to battle on two fronts.
The strategy has been all wrong from Parish and Co. They had ample warning that Glasner was leaving and had months to do at least some successional planning. Sage has probably seen enough himself.

Yeah. Sod all point padding out the squad if you never play any of them and stick with the same eleven. All that means is you’ve increased your wage bill for no reason.

We have to face it none of the summer signings have made the first team better. Not one has been an unqualified success so far and some (Khalali, Disasi) look like disasters as it stands.

At some point we will have to sack off Europe and concentrate on premier league games. Last year we started off in the league well and got points on the board. This year not so much.

Meantime Parish earns £2.8M a year 3rd highest in Prem I think you’ll find

Yet we’re 17th in the League.

Strategically he’s lacking bordering on inept.

This is the Chairman that promised to take us to the next level - which he did there’s no argument about that.

But now we’re here he hasn’t invested into our position - if anything he’s de-invested.

Ground redevelopment started now stalled again.

On the pitch we’re going backwards at an alarming rate.

Is his race run..??

For all his failures I know he tries his best to put the club first and has done everything and anything for the club.

Everything falls apart with time. Maybe it's just time for us to go down.
