Do you go to that Brighton Wetherspoons?

That was the best option in Charrington pubs when they had their rotten Crown bitter on tap. Suspect they got it out of there in the first place anyway.
Always drunk Light and IPA bitter in charrington pubs mainly you got three quarters of a pint of bitter and bottle of light ale 🍺🍺

When I worked in a pub light & bitter was a popular choice when the landlord had pis..annoyed me because they all got a pint and a bottle.
Back in the mists of time when most of the pubs near me were Courage handing back a third of a pint and getting topped up and a bottle of light ale was par for the course. I do remember getting pulled for it though when drinking Directors rather than Courage Best and substituting the light ale with a barley wine with predicable results. In the Bull’s Head it was Ramrod(a very strong barley wine) and Special (Youngs). Wow!

I grew up in Old Coulsdon and the nearest proper beer was the Bulls Head.

That would do the job. My dad used to drink Barley Wine and Watneys Stingo mixed - I thought they were the same drink but he liked it.

Never had a problem with Wetherspoons. Decent selection of drinks at a reasonable price. food is mas produced microwaved/deep fried affair, but you know what you're getting, and it has improved immensly over the last 10 years or so.
Their model show's the big players that you don't have to charge extortionate beer or food prices to work, and many of them should take a leaf out of their book. Obviously there are Good ones and Bad ones, and the only reason their clientele is an issue is because of their cheap prices, but if More pubs followed their example, then 'Spoons wouldn't be singled out.
In a world where the Gastropub rules and £20 burger and chips are commonplace, somewhere offering affordable and unpretentious wares is welcome.
In fact, the only thing I have an issue with is that they don't allow dogs!

I like that if you are a red nosed alcoholic who smells of p*ss, you can go and get a cheap pint at 7am before you start to wake up from the night before and take a long hard look at yourself.

Paradoxically pretty dull the Bright Helm. But there are so many great pubs in Brighton that I rarely go there unless I'm going to cinema on the seafront. Hove has some of the best.

The Spoons near me is like a Wuhan lab. You catch something just by touching the cutlery. Lots of the infirm and dying inside who will be happy to splutter over you. When i go, i stay safe outside.

There is a chain of decent pubs that don’t charge the earth for food but have a limited beer selection. Unfortunately the McMullens chain don’t have many pubs south of the river but are slowly buying up redundant sites. When we win at the Cup (Carabao or FA) next year head to The Horse and Guardsman in Whitehall near Trafalgar Square to quench your thirst during festivities!!
