I said it in the Leeds match thread, but we are in danger sometimes of taking for granted how incredible Wharton's awareness is.
Twice yesterday the ball suddenly broke to him after a 50/50 and without even looking he immediately played our centre forward in on goal with a pass from range. The first one was when Justin did very well to cover it for Leeds, the second one was when Nketiah passed it to Sarr. In both cases Wharton had no way of knowing that the ball would break to him even two seconds before it did. In the blink of an eye he put our striker away.
I always feel like he is at a crossroads between trying to lay a bit like a Busquets or a bit like a Pirlo. The former dominated by keeping everything short, crisp, and simple, the latter by picking out long range defence splitting passes. To me, he was on the cusp of going down the former path when he had better players around him (Eze and Olise, especially) but has moved more to the latter path since then. Trying more things means he'll get more wrong, but he is still in the same category as an Olise or Guehi, in that he has 'it' and could absolutely play at any level with the best players and only get better.
