Malick Fofana.

If he gets back to the form he was showing before his injury, then they have an amazing player on their hands by the looks of it, but he was out for most of last season due to ankle surgery, so obviously there are questions around whether he'll be the same player (perhaps why the fee was £25 million and not 40-50). If we'd signed him, his other ankle would have snapped on day two.

It’s a damning indictment of our current transfer policy. If the reports are accurate and our manager is personally phoning players he rates in an attempt to persuade them to join Palace, it suggests there is very little strategic planning or contingency built into our recruitment process.
Rather than having a clear, long term succession plan for key positions and identifying potential replacements well in advance, it seems we are continually reacting to situations once managers or players make it clear they want to leave. That kind of reactive approach inevitably puts the club on the back foot and makes it far harder to negotiate from a position of strength.
For a club that wants to establish itself at the top end of the Premier League, recruitment needs to be proactive, structured and aligned with a long term footballing strategy, not driven by last minute necessity.
Amen

It’s being suggested that he preferred Palace but we were unhappy with the selling club doing a limited medical on a player who has had recent ankle surgery so we walked. If that’s true, with our injury record, it may be a sensible decision. Time will tell.

What a load of tripe.

I never understand how someone who has absolutely no knowledge of the inner workings, just assumes that everyone at the cub is completely useless.

And also doenst seam to understand that there are so many dependencies with these transfers.

We've been after Khalaili for a year, thats long term planing for you.

well we only made a formal bid after Sunderland had agreed a fee on the final day of the transfer window, so it appears there is some truth in the earlier comment.

Managers do ask there old players if they want to come with him , its a big bargaining chip in transfer window , all clubs do it , do you think managers don't talk to them , which is very naive , they can open up dialogue with them , also new manager has seen different players close up or worked with them , its called scouting

The summer of a new manager will always throw these up. It takes (at least) the summer for him to analyse the squad and see what he needs. He most likley heard that Fofana was being sold from his connections at Lyonm went to SP&Co to said, 'he'd be a good Addition - I'll could have A word, we could nick him'

Most people just don't understand how the transfer window works. There was no long term planning available for Fofana, he wanted to stay at Lyon for a year and then hopefully move to a big team, then they lost in the champions league qualifiers last week so they had to sell him quickly. We worked to get a deal done and almost did. Lets be honest he doesn't care whether he plays for us or Sunderland as his plan is still to move to a big team within 2 seasons, so his team opted for the deal that gave them more of the money rather than Lyon.

I am with you, most of our players are clearly signings we have been watching and working on for years, but you also have to be reactive in the transfer window as you never know what deals are going to pop up last minute. If all you do is sign players as part of a long term plan you are going to leave value on the table from deals you didn't think were possible.

Enlighten us then with your knowledge! Never said everyone at the club was useless, but our recent transfers seem to be panic buying. We lose two top class central defenders, so where’s the plan Mr Knowledgeable- humour me.

Its all piecing a story together based on what we know, which will only be a fraction of the truth.

What if we only got active with this one because something started happening with Sarr. Or maybe we were just lining up a back up? Or maybe we were just trying to destabilise the Sunderland transfer?

Point is we dont know the whole truth. Which is why I find it odd that everyone jumps to the assumption that the club is run my morons.

I doubt we were ever really looking at the player, but I suspect that the agent made initial contact with us to try and bump up the deal for the player knowing that Sage and the club would be interested. Then once we had shown a bit of interest the agent was happy to play us off against Sunderland.
I doubt he was ever coming to us, and it was all about getting a better deal.

I'm not claiming to have any knowledge. Literally the opposite

My starting point is that we as fans likely only know 1% of what is going on. So with so little knowlede of whats actually happening, how can you make the assumption that everything is panicked, or devoid of planning.

On the face of it IMO our business is anything but panicked.

Starting RWB replaced
Bakcup RB (Clyne) replaced
Backup LB replaced.
Centerback replaced with 3 centerbacks
Rubbish wideman, swapped which hopefully a less rubbish option
3 new attackers added
1 new box-to-box midfielder added

Reports also coming out that we weren't happy with a Lyon run medical, considering the injury he is coming back from.

The joint medical suggests rather more work and rather a lot earlier than your post suggests.

It may also suggest that Sunderland were prepared to take the risk and we were not, so it may not have all been about agent power.

That we had Osorio lined up and signed also supports uncertainty and sensible contingencies in place.

I think we got the lesser player, but time will tell.

...with only 3 of the 11 on deadline day.

Thats my only worry, Fofarna looks seriously good

We will see as the season progresses whether the decisions made have brought in the right quality and can make it in the prem. After Brennan Johnson purchase for one and his recent departure, I will stick with my opinion that life after Dougie is not good.
I really hope I’m wrong and we’ve found 1-2 superstars after casting our net widely.

The signings of Johnson and Strand Larsen stick out like sore thumbs in all of this.

We already knew OG wasn’t staying and there seemed little point in trying to make placatory signings more particularly at the level of cost involved.

Compare that with the current signings which I have no issues with as they all look thought through and a couple of them at least could be gems. It would have been nice to have that Strand Larsen money and JSL/Guessand wage to spend on a top striker because despite formerly having a decent scoring record, I’m struggling to see the value in JSL.

Was it purely a panic buy because we thought Mateta was out the door or was Hobbs overstating JSL ability just to show he could get someone through the door? Who knows but I think they were both very poor signings.

Posters on here keep saying he’s going to come good but it’s extremely telling that if he is fit then Mateta starts over him.

I don’t know that JSL was a panic buy. That looks like a case where the club attempted to plan for what everyone thought would be JPM leaving. We can all have our views on whether JSL was off sufficient quality but he seemed like a decent enough fit for the lone striker role in Glasner’s system.

As it turned out JPM didn’t leave but if he had and we’d had nobody lined up then people would have criticised the club for failing to plan. Being left with both of them was never the intention. At the time Nketiah was out injured as I recall so if JPM had left and we didn’t have a replacement we’d have had zero strikers.
