Crystal Palace vs. Manchester City match thread

I think we should remember that a very big part of the reason we won the FA Cup Final was Richards excellent performance in the air against Haaland. At that time City would commonly move the ball around until they could get DeBruyne on the ball in the inside right position, and he could pick out Haaland at the back post. Richards brilliantly got his head on three or four back post deliveries, beating Haaland to each of them to prevent a certain goal on each occasion.

I don't think playing centrally in a three suits Richards, and he did lose Haaland for the first goal, but let's not just throw our arms up in the air and say he can't do the job.

I've made a similar observation about Richards.
When he's stationed either side of the central player in the three, he can compete very effectively for crosses that come in.
However, when he's the central player of the three, on occasions he doesn't seem to get off the ground to defend crosses.
It's not immediately clear why this seems to be the case.

Last year he never got opportunities because Glasner had a pre existing relationship with Kamda and kept playing him, despite the average performances.

You’re so far off in your assessment of him it’s funny.

We’re all sat here crying out for solidity, standards and leadership and yet leave Hughes rotting on bench. It’s silly.

I do get you on the leadership and determination point, however, pace, game awareness and passing have all dropped off over last season. I think nearly all of us can like Hughes whilst also realising he isn't really the answer except as an occasional squad player.

I accept he is adept in those situations, however neither Tomiyasu,Canvot or Richards thwarted him.

I actually said the same thing as the ball rolled over the line. They will all be banging on about what a great goal it was. It wasn’t, it was simply poor defending.

Blast! Someone should have told him about the main stand re-development. According to a tv commentator on Friday nght, apparently we had Semenyo in his youth. What was the reason he left us I wonder? Surely the club must have insisted on a sell-on clause.

Pace, sure. Happens to all of us. His game awareness is still top.

But ultimately I agree - I don’t think he’s the long term answer either. I just think he’s the best option for us right now alongside Wharton. And results thus far would suggest that something needs to change in there.

Do you think everyone just brought back their players a week or two ago? I know full well teams like Liverpool, Arsenal and Man Utd didn't in the main. They expect more from their players. We should be emulating them for best practice. Henderson and Pino played what - 1 game? Munoz needed rest - he always does. He's a Columbia player more than a Palace one recently. Now Forest can look forward to him not even being able to stand up after an international break.

We very clearly need better sports science and physios and, most of all, proper, real rotation options - particularly for Wharton and Kamada. Neither are the best physical specimens. Both are very technical players.

Trouble is if we forced them back without a rest then when we still have a slow start everyone would say it’s because the players are knackered and didn’t get a rest.
I know not all of them were heavily involved and some were obviously involved longer as the tournament went on, but with a few of our players either leaving or at least wanting out, it was always going to be a poor pre season and a slow start to the season, but what’s new for us? So maybe you’re a tad right, there’s things we could do a bit better

There’s things we could do a lot better but such is the Palace way. We are good at making a crisis out of a drama.
 
while we have had decent spells in both the first couple of games the name of the game is to score goals at one end and keep them out of the other. We have been poor in both these aspects. Sage though does need to be given time to work with his squad post the transfer deadline window due to the potential changes in personal.
