Whenever I travel anywhere in Europe these days I am inevitably struck by how much better off and contented the average person seems. If that’s the result of not thinking then perhaps we ought to reinstall some of those who have let us down in the past.

I think a lot depends on where you’re travelling and why. I’ve travelled extensively for work over the past couple of years, including in Germany and France, and I’ve spent time in some of the rougher areas. As with anywhere, if you visit the French Riviera or Monaco, most people will appear fairly content. Go instead to some of the more deprived areas, parts of Montpellier, for example and you’ll find a decidedly unhappy undercurrent.

There’s also an obvious selection bias. If you’re travelling for work, most of the people you encounter will, by definition, have jobs. If you’re travelling as a tourist, I’m guessing you’re not booking Trotters’ Ethnic Tours for a day out in Croydon. You generally see the more attractive and prosperous side of a country, rather than a representative sample of how the average person actually lives.

The Icelandic language is the closest living language to the Old Norse of the Vikings. They can quickly say goodbye to that. Soon headed off to the same museum-cabinet as Romansh, Irish, Doric, Cockney, Maltese, and Breton.

I'd say that's the whole main point of this referendum. Just some fishermen they need to do over in order to progress to the riches of EU factory fishing.

Woo-Hoo. I now predict Brussels will start to bully them with economic, financial, & Passport restrictions.

Brussels wants to gobble up as much territory as possible. Turkey ? Morocco ? Belorussia, the Balkans, ....and probably wants to get back into Scotland through the Independence back-door.

Well following the vote in Iceland, the cost of fire-insurance for their Churches will remain cheap

Apparently No means Yes or Maybe according to the BBC

"Equally, the No vote does not rule out the chance of Iceland resuming talks in the future."

So the people of Iceland will keep getting referendums until they get the answer right. this was their second NO.

I can see why the EU want them to join:

- Prosperous country unlike most other current applicants. The Icelandic's would likely be putting money in not taking it out.

- Access to their fishing waters which the Spanish and French amongst others would love

- Small population so freedom of movement would not be a problem (tens of thousands of Icelandic people would not be looking for jobs in Europe).

- The territory would expand the reach of the EU which the globalists would love.

And what's in it for the people of Iceland?

The main class who want it are the business lobby and the political class who want access to the Brussels gravy train.

A whole class of average to below average politicians given money and power far beyond their competence.

Iceland are in Schengen and the Single Market, they just dont want to be part of the EU admin/government. Seems like a good compromise, same as Norway. Get the economic benefits of free trade, free movement (so their citizens can spend longer than 90 days in Spain etc, work/retire to somewhere hot without visa issues) and without the added buearocracy of the EU parliament.
