Everton vs. Crystal Palace match thread

Why are people so negative? It was a game we could have won on another day.
We have not beaten Everton for 14 years or some.
And you are all pretty much still thinking we are the worst ever.
2 post hits, one a supersave from sadly Pickford and the other yeah well could have been better placed. And then it would have been 0-2 instead of 2-0.
I was impressed with our performance and think we will be ok.
I wasn’t that impressed, but yes we will be ok. We will avoid relegation and be there this time next year, losing out first game of the season and complaining about the quality of our well paid strikers and our new signings and why we have sold our best players without replacing them.

Having watched Hull, Brentford and highlights of the other games we look physically weaker than most teams. Not sure Sage can do much about that but at least we didn't concede from a set piece for once.

True, and those clubs that got beaten would also have beaten Everton yesterday. That’s how weak we look and it’s going to take a lot to change that in my opinion. Two new centre backs are required quickly, one being central to move Richard’s to his best position. We also needed Hughes for Kamada for last 15/20 minutes yesterday as Kamada was shot! Not sure how this was missed by Sage?

You make a good point. We lack dynamic athleticism, have moments of lethargy, particularly in defence, and look generally less fit then the opposition.

My one concern is teams are psychologically knocked by a goal just before half time, especially when they have been on top.. Unless the coach is able to lift them up during the break....
A number of teams drop there heads , if we didnt have them goal scoring chances they may have come out 2nd half with a different mind set

The result yesterday would have been predictable most seasons. We for whatever reason don’t beat Everton, and yes we are always missing our clear chances, two against the posts, history says even if we go two up against Everton, we still lose ,so would they have been enough? Worries for the coming season are deeper than this predictable result.

He couldn't replace Kamada because we'd already used all 5 subs when Riad got injured

The Wharton and Kamada partnership is our best combination, it's won us three trophies, but just from listening we did seem to lack resilience and direction second half.
No, it really isn’t.

Anyway, aside from the need for Lerma or Hughes to come into that midfield, I’d actually bench Mateta after that. You can’t miss two sitters like that and retain your place. No way. Larsen in from now.

I was disappointed with Munoz losing the ball for the first goal yesterday. His game visibly dropped after his shoulder injury last season. That point in his career also coincided with Barca showing interest in him and he may have restricted his game to ensure no more injuries. David Moyes may have second thoughts after seeing the match turning mistake so who would be interested?

After recent defeats in this fixture I think many of us could have written the script for this one.

Palace settled first, moved the ball around well and created good chances that were either squandered, saved by Pickford or denied by the woodwork. At that point I was waiting for the inevitable...and sure enough when the below par Munoz sloppily conceded possession, we were duly punished. These are the thin margins that decide games.

Conceding so early in the second half ended the game as a contest. Indeed, it looked more likely to get worse than see Palace come back into the game.

Predictably Sage is attracting critisism from the usual suspects on here. But let's not lose sight of a couple of facts ; he's just had his best defender sold without an adequate replacement brought in and Palace are a club that always suffer when pre season is hindered by players being away at a major tournament.

The positives ( yes, there were some - at least in my eyes ) - Nketiah looked bright and found space in the final third. Should have scored though I admit. Tomiyasu looked composed and purposeful - if he can stay fit he'll be very useful. And Wharton ran the game in the first 45 minutes.

The negatives - I don't like that back three. While I accept that replacing the quality of Guehi and Lacroix is not an easy fix, going into the season with Riad, Richards and Canvot didn't fill me with confidence. None of them look comfortable playing the ball out from the back and are easily pressured into making mistakes. I also think that Wharton needs a ball winner alongside him, especially against the likes of Everton. Kamada isn't up to the physical challenge.

Finally, Mateta and Munoz. I can see the clubs point of view that while even if under a contract he doesn't like, Mateta should earn the money he's being paid and put in a performance. But if yesterday is anything to go by, the sooner he's out the door the better. When Munoz got subbed, he got an ovation from the Everton fans as he walked along the perimeter of the pitch - and then proceeded to have a cozy walk to the dressing room with David Moyes ! Adios, Dani .....

Did anyone else think the ref was a bit one sided yesterday .
