Rock is Dead, Long Live Rock

I can't stand it when they put a classic song's rif or chorus in a rap song and then that's why people like it.

I remember p diddy saying he was struggling to write a song for godzilla and then he heard kashmir by led zep playing and he had inspiration.

Yeah, you knicked their tune and then put a sh1t rap over the top of it!!

The band MGMT, they were a couple a college kids studying music, told people it really isn't hard to create pop music, wrote some catchy tunes, played at campuses just taking the piss with it, got a massive record deal out of it.

Like the Italian song which is just gibberish supposed to sound like English - can't be arsed to look up the title but it's something long. It's currently on an easy Jet advert.

Songwriting is pretty dead, or should I say, we don't get to see much of it anymore. I saw at the beginning of this thread Billy Corgan being quoted (he's the lead singer of my favourite band...not a great singer but a talented songwriter). He talks about how those that still play electric guitar are all just about shredding in YouTube now, not writing good tunes.

I write music in my spare time. I think when I was a kid I wanted to be a rock star but lacked the talent. I had friends that could play their instruments well and perform live. After a few years of realising they were mocking me for buying a bass guitar and not learning to play it, I started to study music theory (something which opens some avenues but does close down some originality/creativity I think). I now write a lot of music that I have no intention to play to anybody but the process makes me happy. I'd like to think I'm not alone. You'll never hear their finished results but I hope that rock (or songwriting in general) is still alive being enjoyed as a process. Not about fame, not about record sales, but just people creating stuff and getting a buzz from it.

Yeah the science behind pop music is very basic. If the record companies spend enough money on marketing they can make anyone a star. Look at the spice girls, they could have picked any 5 half decent looking girls from the uk. They would have always been the biggest girl group in the world.

Afternoon All, I'm in a three-piece kinda 1977/78 retro new wave/punk/mod band. We've got a 22 yr old singer who also plays bass,my mate (whose project it is)plays drums and is 59 and I play guitar,I'm 64( but really feel like I'm an 18 yr old!). We write our own songs but have a few covers that have been reworked to our style. Two CD's out and third we are recording , as we speak, with a fourth being written also. We've done around 20 gigs(Islington Hope n Anchor,The Carlisle Hastings) and have a further 10 this year, mostly all support( to the Chords and the Circles)We are called The Dead Star Boys. Unfortunately I've forgotten how to link YouTube vids onto here so if you're interested then please check us out.Look for "Marbles" or Test Tube Baby" ( there's a few live bits also)to get a sense of our style which is basic stripped back rock. So anyways,in my book Rock is definately not dead! Let me know what you think.Ollie's Dad,Ash.
