Prostate Cancer test

Very interesting thread. It would seem that many of us chaps on here have been diagnosed with the dreaded Prostate Cancer.

I had my 1st PSA test in 2011 which showed that Cancer was present. The medics wanted to operate but before going ahead they needed to check that it hadn't spread. What they found was that I also had Myeloma, which is incurable.

Long story short, both conditions have been treated with reasonable success, although the 'treatments' were extremely uncomfortable to say the least, and with difficult side effects.

The message from me though is this. The PSA test might not be foolproof, but it gives a good indication that Cancer may be present and I would strongly encourage blokes to get tested.

There's no doubt that I wouldn't still be around
15 years later if I hadn't had mine.

It's been proven above that PSA is a very worthwhile test, if only as a warning.
Because I don't tell you the reason I get regular bloodwork, you assume it's for no valid reason? It's private and personal to me and absolutely necessary. I don't spend much money on anything other than holidays, around £150 max for some private health checks per year is about the equivalent of a meal out with my wife.

Again, mentioned elsewhere and in the thread that rates of prostate cancer are high in black, middle-aged men. I'd rather waste my money to be sure, than leave it too late. Quite the idiotic view to just say "ah well, we're all going to get something, I won't bother checking my health". I am very health conscious because I love my life and want to be around as long as possible for those in it.
Your wasting your time trying to debate with Dr Death

To be fair to the NHS I went to my GP about something different and mentioned about my water works and was given a PSA test before I left tge surgery. Tge test came back high and had an appointment within two weeks for the hospital, had an MRI then the internal backside one and yes I have prostate cancer. Have another appointment in a few weeks to decide what procedure to take and have seen there is a less invasive new one called Focal Therapy: that is new so will ask about that.

Best wishes fella

That is not being health conscious it's getting into the realms that you may have some sort of mental disorder or even OCD.

It's your choice what to waste money on.

PSA has not been proven to be worthwhile that is like claiming the covid tests are both are a waste of money and step in the process.

People will get sick that is life and keep getting blood work etc done changes nothing because reference rangers they use are made up (They change them and not all labs use the same either)

If you are realty focused on health exercise/lifestyle/diet these are the things to focus on not getting labs which really do not tell a great deal.

Terrible.

The PSA test is a massive win. It also spotted I was pre-diabetic before I developed type 2, and I'm not fat btw. It changed my diet.

This is completely short sighted and should be opposed. Let's stop cervical screening too while we're at it and see the women go bonkers
I can see both sides. The PSA is not overly accurate - see below.

About 75% of men with a raised PSA do not have cancer (false positives), and roughly 15% to 20% of men with prostate cancer have normal PSA levels (false negatives). It acts as an initial risk indicator rather than a direct measure of cancer.

They're not saying you can't have one, just that it is not blanket coverage.

I asked for one 2 years ago and was given an appointment without any issues.

Christ! What an outrageous comment. You have no idea what health issues he has, I think an apology is in order

I agree. A dreadful comment made in ignorance of underlying reasons.

I have blood tests every 3 months at the request of my medics to spot very quickly if my condition starts to deteriorate and so they can then change my treatment plan to stay ahead of the game.

It's all about my wanting to stay around as long as I can. Simple really.

he was choosing to pay for tests privately not because of an underlying condition which may need to be monitored.

It's nothing like your case.

If people want to stay around as long as possible sort out what i said exercise/lifestyle/diet that is what is important not looking at made up numbers from tests.

Ive done the poo swabs in the post thing. Is that for prostate ?

Also been lucky enough to have female nurses put a finger up the bum during 2 separate A&E visits.
I think that was a prostate check

They aren’t “made up numbers”.

They are both an early indicator and an extremely valuable way of monitoring how fast a prostate cancer is growing and indicate what needs to be done and when. They aren’t the definitive answer. I had a PET scan after a fast rise in PSA which showed where the cancer had reoccurred and how it was to be treated.

I would almost certainly be dead without having had PSA checks!

Almost certainly not. They would be for bowel cancer. A DRA can allow the surface of your prostate to be felt. A hard surface indicates possible cancer and that further investigation is needed.

poo sample is for colon cancer, FH.
prostate, if youre unlucky, is a biopsy that involves needles shot into it for a sample.
Often blood test does it.

This is a progesterone cream for the menopause. Both women and men's menopause.

As men reach a certain age their testosterone levels drop and estrogen levels increase. I believe the opposite happens for women.

Anyways, due to bpa oil in plastics, soya and other oestrogen mimicking things, mens oestrogen levels have increased over the years.

This progesterone cream balances up the two hormones testosterone and oestrogen in men and women.

What's causing the rise in prostate cancer is debatable, however I understand that it is in part due to an imbalance in these two hormones.

The cream works brilliantly with women. If you have any menopausal ladies in your life; this product works fantastically well.

PSA test does not inform you if you have or do not have cancer.

The test is just like the covid one not fit for purpose (Neither was deigned to be used this way)

Both have done more harm then good especially the PSA one which has resulted in many people having invasive procedures when there was no need.

The statistics for prostate cancer are high all all parties it should get a lot more attention.

Look at why has it become a problem now in the past it really wasn't and it realistically comes down to lifestyle/diet the same with many other diseases we are seeing increase in even at younger ages.
I heard about men having problems after taking the test. Unfortunately I couldn't find the research information on it. It was around a year ago.

Yes they are made up numbers again go and get educated you have 0 knowledge in science.

This is a pattern with you listening to everything authority figures claim.

When the people who even came up with the test say it should not be used in this way that is a clear indication and if you really look into the data it's not a good test which is why they are using the other step process now.

There is thousands of people who are living without any problem different types of cancer and the same with ones which have PSA test showing high levels yet they have no cancer.

You should have been having multi tests anyway if you had been treated for cancer in the past a person is never cured they only go into remission.

A blood test is not a valid way to diagnose.

The biopsy if done correctly is multi points taking samples from many different not just 1 closer to 20.

Its not a nice process which is why many people had this done because PSA claimed they had a problem when they ended up not being the case.

This is so wrong it really ought not be allowed to remain here as it could lead to someone distrusting the value of checking your PSA. It’s an extremely important indicator which guides the oncologist on what further investigations are required and following them with interventions. Alongside how and when any interventions are required. Many are put on “watchful waiting” with routine PSA tests used to determine how fast the cancer is growing.

Diet and exercise are very important for your general health but they play no role at all in the management of prostate cancer. They can only help you manage its symptoms.
