Palace team vs SC Freiburg

I’d lay off the clickbait if I was you. Not good for your wellbeing.
Mate I know..!!

But does that answer the interest in Camara..??

I guess if you look at objectively - if we sell Wharton for £90/£100M and get Camara and say Smit (Keith Smith) in - it would be decent business.

The concern is the disruption - we already need at least one quality CB, arguably two with the Lacroix money - as I’ve said before I’d go Bisseck and Le Guen.

Then with Munoz off - looks like we’ve already replaced him with Khalaili - then Gozo on the cards too.

Looks good business - but so much disruption is going to impact our start to the season.

Even if we can trust Steve to do it..!!

We will see.

I'm confused. Why was extra time played in a friendly? There are also conflicting reports on the final score: some saying 2-0, others 3-0.

What the hell's going on?

Apologies if this has already been addressed. I just couldn't be arsed to read through all of it.
I think that question relates to most things in life these days.

Yeah, I saw 2-0 and then 3-0. Like yourself couldn't be bothered to find out what was going on.

I guess the powers at be will find more ways to confuse and annoy us fans this season (water breaks, banning banners, minute's silence for a dead squirrel, players names that all sound the same etc etc)

There was another half hour match, more or less continuous from the end of the 90. There was a break and then two 15 minutes. They scored again. So there were 120 minutes between us. One normal 90 with breaks and then 30 with a break. There were hydration breaks but it was over 30 degrees.

I can explain. The purpose of yesterday’s game was to give as many players as much game time as possible. The players need to get match fit and familiar with Sage’s style of play and Sage needs to see how the players perform. This is why they played for 120 minutes AND why the team that finished was completely different to the team that started.

It’s also why most people are not particularly bothered about the score - it was secondary to getting game time. At the end of 90 minutes (like in a real game) it was 2-0 but after the extra 30 minutes it was 3-0 - but whatever, it’s not really important.

What was important is that the players in need of minutes got them and some of those who have been with Sage from the start didn't get any either because they're not in Sage's plans for the 1st team squad or didn't need the minutes..

It is important..

it showed they got passed us 3 times..

It showed we couldn't score a goal in 120 minutes.

If it was just down to fitness/cardio they'd be playing British bulldog for 90 minutes.

I agree. Other teams still try to win. But when we don't it's 'not about the result'
A winning mentality is priceless.

It’s easy to look at Palace’s performance against Freiburg and simply say it was poor because, frankly, it was.

I can understand players not wanting to go flying into challenges or risk picking up an injury just before the season starts. Pre-season is ultimately about getting minutes into legs and building fitness, and nobody wants to miss the opening weeks because of an injury in a friendly.

But surely Freiburg were thinking exactly the same thing? Their players have a season ahead of them too, yet they still managed to play with intensity, purpose and, most importantly, like they actually wanted to win the game.

That was the worrying part for me. Palace lacked flair and creativity, and there seemed to be vulnerabilities all over the pitch. We looked far too easy to play against at times. Freiburg, on the other hand, looked organised, committed and much more assured. They didn’t seem to have the same obvious weaknesses that Palace showed.

You can make allowances for pre-season, fitness levels and players protecting themselves, but there still needs to be some intent. You want to see patterns of play, creativity, organisation and signs that the team is ready to compete when the real football starts.

Hopefully it was just a bad pre-season performance, but there was enough on show to be concerned about. The lack of flair in particular was evident, and there are vulnerabilities across the pitch that need addressing quickly.
Thanks for this thoughtful post. Some countries are closer to the start of the season than others, so these matches between teams from different countries always have a slight suggestion of the unreal. Even seven days' more preparation makes a huge difference. It explains why Brentford putting seven on Frankfurt is a bit unusual. The Bundesliga doesn't start for another three weeks.

Which is why our result against yesterday's Bundesliga opposition is EXTREMELY worrying. And that we'll have to play it Glasner style for a few games???????

We beat Fulham 2-1 in their own back yard. To me that was the more telling result.
I get that. However, if we look at it as many do, as a loss- and judge the performance, it wasn’t great. We were second best across the pitch for long periods.
Of course, there are positives to take from the result, but why is it that when we lose, it’s framed as valuable “minutes”, yet when we win, the result suddenly becomes “more telling”? Surely the performance should be judged with the same perspective regardless of the result.

Sage is looking at his options seeing what he has , so won't be any big speechs yet from him , new start new players , friendlys are warm up games only , players still only just reporting back , I trust him ,

He gets the trust of the players and they listen then no issues , players sulk because they are not picked or don't like the change , can go , I'm sticking with once transfers are all done I can judge beater what we have , and also see how the team is shaping after 2 or 3 matchs

That never happens though. Just look at the ratings for players in any match where one team has won and the other has lost. Those in the winning team will be rated at around 7 and those in the losing team around 4 or 5 at best even where the losing team had been the better team or where the best player on the pitch had been on the losing team. It's probably a psychological thing.

As Sage has recognised, we're not ready to play his system so it's back to Glasnerball until all the players are up to speed with Sageball.

Finally, where players are struggling with the system the manage ris wanting them to play, you will get a disjointed performance etc.

I'm expecting a slow start to our season rooted in the bottom 4 or 5 teams but we should be looking more comfortable by Christmas.

Just what is Sage's system? I'm not sure I would recognise it if even if we played it.

I've tried looking at old clips on YouTube etc, but nothing stands out as being very different to the now familiar tippy tappy passing triangles that Pep introduced into the game. I hope it means he will support and develop fast, swerving runs into the box and incisive shots at goal. It would be devastating to lose Wharton who is our master of the forward pass.

I hope that whatever style of play Sage wants to introduce, it's more dynamic than we have seen from his dour demeanor so far. As you can tell, I've not taken to him yet, still referring to him as Sage, whereas I immediately took a shine to Glasner who I started to call Ollie straight away.

Waiting with baited breath for our trip to Everton.

I notice his Lens side beat a strong PSG side in their community shield yesterday.
He evidently has something strong. If he can translate that to this palace squad is the task. And a very tough one at that.

Frank De Boer had a dour demeanour and he wasn't at the helm for long !

The only thing we know from the weekend is the players were not up to speed.
A good German side three weeks from their start beat us well and truely , being one week from a league match. Not a good look .
A week before a slightly lesser squad had a decent work out at Fulham. Just my opinion but even allowing for some hairy defending we looked ourselves in this one ,Glasnerball maybe.
Was hoping our way of playing would not change to much but listening to Sage, not sure now. As many have said preseason is for preparation, our results have left the question. Are we prepared?

Monsieur Sage has stated that we are not prepared to play his system.
I sense some disquiet amongst our supporters as the season approaches.
