I wanted him to work out at Palace. But clearly was never going to happen. Went to Como and saw him play there. He was terrible (as was JRS)

You make a decent point.
When we signed Marco from Sunderland he was a roughly one goal in three games striker and guess what? For us he was similar, one goal in three games, including a goal in a win at Anfield.
His biggest problem was that he was not Ian Wright.
The tragedy is instead of buying him we could have had a front three of Bright; Salako; Collymore (with John hopefully not wrecking his knee, which was Marco's debut for us).

Looking at Transfermarkt, it looks like paid Arsenal 500K more than they paid!

He wasn't just quick, either. He had it all. Pace, strength, skill, powerful shot off both feet, great header of the ball. The best all round no9 we've ever had, I'd say. Christ, what would peak Armstrong be worth in today's market?
He just couldn't stay at peak level for long enough. A real waste.
At least we got his best years and made good money on Armstrong. He's sort of a reverse Brennan Johnson in that way.

I’ve nothing against Johnson. He was obviously a decent player at Forest and under big Ange at Spurs but he’s looked lost since those days and incapable of regaining his touch. I hope he does ok at Everton but only after we beat them.
For me the issue is who thought it was a good deal to pay £35 million for him. The hope is that the deal was structured in such a way that half was paid upfront and Everton have inherited the rest.
