I'm encouraged by the mooted signings.
There seems to be more emphasis on width and provision of crosses.

It was a bugbear of mine last season how often our players were in good crossing positions only to knock the ball backwards or into midfield.
Understandable if we had no forwards in the box, but often they had made the run to get ahead of their marker and still the ball would not come in.

Of course the proof will be in the pudding and the new signings will have to perform better than Johnson, Esse and JRS.
I'm assuming that Sage is on board with the new signings and believes they will suit his style of play.

I recall last season (15th place finish) games where Glasner had to rely on players other than Wharton and Kamada. We all saw the reality, games where we could barely muster an attempt on goal due to the weakened midfield and a clear lack of creativity. I'll grant that they did help fill out the squad, but at this stage they're not going to get any better and the future beckons.

Agree, we could just about get by for a game or 2 with one of Lerma/Hughes in the team. But when they both started we looked blunt.

Certainly need someone else in the middle.

Getting as much money as possible for Munoz (after we secure a replacement) is probably the right thing to do - especially if it means we can reinvest.

We do have a replacement in Mingueza - RWB is his preferred position and he played their for most of his 3 years at Celta Vigo.

Crosses would probably suit JSL more than JPM so it might be a case of change the target man - change the suppliers. If so it would indicate Sage is more willing to change formation/tactics to get a result than Glasner.

Rocks change formation quicker than Glasner. Although he will troll against us and play a 4-4-2.

I think it's fair to say that since we came up, squad depth has been our biggest issue. Specifically the drop off in quality from the first team to the reserves. This goes back to Zaha and us being completely unable to win without him.

A midfield of Lerma and Hughes is never going to have the same guile as Wharton and Kamada and is also far more likely to pick up yellow cards. However, this doesn't make them Championship quality. I never feel panicked when Hughes comes on or starts, and Lerma as a MF/CB back up is very valuable.

They are 30s now so if Doucoure or a new signing displaces one of them I won't cry about it but, also, I think it does them a disservice to say they aren't good enough for the league.

Quite unfair I think. Hughes and Lerma are not of the same standard as Wharton and Kamada but comfortably above Championship level. Both have played a significant part in our success and Hughes, in particular, is extremely reliable and a great squad option.

I see him increasingly being used as a CB back-up as opposed to a DM one, specially if we buy another midfielder and Doucoure starts to show some form. His passing as a DM does leave something to be desired as was evidenced at times in the World Cup.

I’m wondering if we’re still holding out for our supposed first choice Matsima, who we apparently wants to join us and agreed terms with.

I wonder whether the arrival of Tomiyasu and Mingueza's ability to play CB if needed (plus having Lerma as a back-up option) means we're waiting till near the window's end to see if we can get one of our targets over the line at a price we're willing to pay, and if not, we'll go for a loan from Chelsea or revisit in January if necessary.

At the moment we seem very active - without spending a great deal
- two free transfers in Tomiyasu and Mingueza
- a swap deal (McNeil)
- a loan (if Guessand happens)
- possible expenditure of £30 plus million on 2 young right sided players, but this is more than offset by the money taken in from outgoings

It wouldn't surprise me if Munoz, Esse, Ozoh and JRS also depart and this could bring in circa £40 million, a lot more if Mateta departs too.
We're linked with a centre back and a central midfielder too, but it appears (at least at the moment) taking into account the outgoings that we will have reshaped the squad without massive expenditure.
Then it's over to Sage!

Cardines has joined Bristol City on loan.

I can make sense of most of our moves, but if the Solly March one materialises then that defeats me.
He's a good player, or at least was a couple of years ago.
But we now have (or will have) cover down both sides and I doubt that March would even make the bench.

Very fair points and I would add that Wharton + any one of them makes each of them look a lot better: often it is about the combinations rather than the individual.

We need a center mid who makes thing happen most of our players are very defensive or slow up play apart from Wharton it's one of the things we lacked and why we struggled at time last season.
