Johnson, McNeil

I think this is the best way out for Palace. The real question has to be ,how did it come to this.?I have watched Johnson quite a lot over his senior career. It’s only what I believe I saw, but watching Johnson, at Forest, I was seeing an exciting very active attacking winger, the fee no surprise when he joined Spurs. Not a massive success by Spurs, historic standards but a fairly regular starter adding regular goals. Not a world beater but effective. For Palace he has been neither, it’s easy to see how Palace stepped in this pile of Shite. Johnson’s levels dropped massively as said the question has to be Why?

i think OG must take some of the blame here. He moaned so much about the summer transfer window and insisted that January signings were needed early in the window.

Johnson was clearly a panic buy to try and keep OG happy.

Surely one of the worst, and clearly most expensive, signings in the club's history

Agreed. At least we haven't simply hung on to Johnson in the hope he'll come good. He was a fish out of water under Glasner's system and Sage seems to have come to the same conclusion. The first game of the season should be even more interesting now. A number of posters on here have concluded that BJ is bound to score against us. I wonder how many Everton fans have come to the conclusion that McNeil is bound to score against them.

yes, always looked good for Forest and occasionally could beat a man too. However, i think he got found out a bit when Forest got promoted and Forest's low block and counter attacking style that season perhaps masked his limitations.

His goals at Spurs also helped his other limitations being highlighted as much.

I've seen many players impress at Championship level but struggle at the higher Premier league standard - Tom Ince being a prime example.

I think Johnson is one of them.
 
My thoughts were that BJ should be given a bit of time this season to see if he could come good but when I heard about this swap, I hoped it would happen. I always like players that want to play for us and McNeil did. I also think he will be a nice fit for Palace.

It just didn't work out for BJ here. Now everyone can move on, even though the money is a big hit for us. If we had got the BJ from Notts Forest days, it would have been a good signing. But ouch....
 
Sage obviously doesn't want him and he has not appeared to settle either.
He seemed like a good buy on paper and you don't win them all - some just do not work out.
At least I know who to bet on to score against us on the 22nd!

I still consider Marco Gabbiadini to be our worst buy. The transfer fee might look low in today’s terms, but it was a record fee for Palace at the time. I think it was the comparison again Ian Wright, who he was brought in the replace, that was most stark. We cut our losses - lost nearly half the money in 4 months (equivalent to Johnson). However, subsequent replacements (albeit less expensive) were similarly uninspiring.

Who was our last record signing to prove his worth? Was Guehi our record signing at the time?

That doesn't support your argument of using it as a basis to judge players. You seem to put high emphasis on it as a strategy as it's basically your slogan for anyone we sign or show interest in.

No - don't forget Benteke and Sakho. (Sorry to have reminded you. I know subconsciously you wanted to forget them)

Had a look at some comments on Instagram from Everton fans.. Alot of them seem to think they're getting a quality winger in Johnson who has 'lots of pace' apparently... My word they're in for a shock if this happens 😂😂

Pace isn't something Brennan's struggled with during his time here. What he has lacked entirely is accuracy in delivery of crosses, and accuracy in shots.

Their gamble is that is a temporary situation. They could be right, we know he has had far better of both attributes in his locker under Postecoglou and Cooper.

In McNeil we will not be getting a goalscorer but we will be getting someone who creates chances for others. As Brennan is currently doing neither, it makes sense for us to do this deal.

My real point is that reading a selling club’s fans forums gives you an idea on how a player is performing and whether he’s any good. Maybe if we’d have looked at what the Spurs fans thought of Johnson we wouldn’t be in this mess. And as I’ve pointed out the Everton fans can’t stand McNeil. I really hope he comes good but have serious doubts.

I think the poster is referring to players, who when they were bought, were our most expensive purchase, so since Benteke was the most expensive prior to us buying Johnson and then Strand Larsen, the others on your list wouldn't count if that was the poster's point. I suppose we need to know who was the most expensive player prior to Benteke. Going back decades, I can remember Clive Allen being the most expensive when we signed him. Since then my memory's blurred on the question.

Yes, I thought that was what he meant but to be honest I couldn't be arsed to work it out so just looked up the highest fees.
