The problem with Johnson is the original price that Spurs paid for Forest, in the region of £47 million which kind of set some sort of benchmark.
He wasn’t an unqualified success at Spurs, but was top scorer under Ang and scored the winner in a European final.
Furthermore, goalscorers always cost more.

Taking the above factors into account may have helped to get to the £35 million we supposedly paid.

In hindsight it looks ridiculous because he didn’t look to be worth £5 million for us, but his past career demonstrates that he can play.
If he does go to Everton I expect he will do ok there.
He will suit the defensive tactics of Moyes hitting teams on the break and he would not be expected to have much involvement in the build up of moves.
 
I think the wider point is the difficulty in trying to get players with experience who can blend into the first team for the workload of more games in the coming season.

It's neither the 'buy the young promising player' strategy, or the 'buy the top players' strategy or the just the 'buy everyone' strategy. And I think it's the hardest to execute. Last January felt like a 'buy the prem players from a struggling club' strategy, but it just hasn't really worked out yet.

As we are all painfully aware we do need someone who can stick the ball in the net, but sadly Brennan is no Gary Lineker (didn't he get stuck out on the wing in his Barca days?). Don't think McNeil will be either, although he could still be a solid signing for us.

Will Franca be closer to the First XI, I wonder?
 
It is sounding like a straight swap, which on paper seems mad, given A) we paid £35 million for BJ in January B) we had a deal with a £20 million fee agreed for McNeil in January, and C) DM's contract runs out in a year. Nonetheless, it could still work out in footballing terms. We need a left-sided player, he can take setpieces and when he was at Burnley he was quality. Forest and Spurs fans basically agree that Johnson is good at running and tap-ins and that's it. He hasn't even been good at that for us. Moyes is not exactly patient or the arm-around-the-shoulder type of manager, so I wouldn't be surprised to see BJ flop there and be moved on to a foreign club within 12 months. Sometimes the fee paid puts unfair pressure on a player, but in Johnson's case I just think he is a terrible footballer.
