I think you will find that when you get your PhD you have to wear a very fetching floppy hat. You also get the wear it at other academic events as well.

I rather liked wearing it when I got mine.
 
i would aliken the University sector to the Restaurant Sector.
Top Universities are like Michelin Star Restaurants.
Shyte colleges are like your Thornton Heath fried Chicken place.

The big profit is often at the bottom of the ladder. And the top of the ladder is often not all its cracked up to be. And in all cases, the kids you teach are customers. Keep them happy at all costs.......all else is irrelevant. Shyte food or a shyte education.....it matters not a jot.

Michelin star restaurants often go financially bust or suffer otherwise closures. Top chefs are mostly spin, smoke & mirrors. Top professors are like workaholic monks - the sacrifices they make are huge. Its like being in the top 1% of piano players, who really wants to compete for that job....its often not paid that well anyway.

Many of the greatest musicians are poor and/or anonymous...... Mozart. Many of the top paid artists are talentless.....Madonna.

Professional Sport is mostly a meritocracy.....the rest of the World isn't.

That is probably accurate these days.

When I went to school ( in the early 1980's) most people did not go to university. They got jobs. You went to university of you were clever or like me you went in order to do something else. I went as ai was sponsored by the Navy to study communications.

You then became a teacher or went into something relevant to your degree,

Now it seems you can go to uni to study any old nonsense ( I noticed the other day you can get a masters in festival studies - I would apply but am unable to remember virtually anything about my festival.attending days due to excess,) Now it's a product to be sold and you walk out with a first and possibly more stupid than you went in.

I was helping run a recruitment campaign recently and it's just scary how many kids with good degrees cannot actually communicate either in writing or speaking and have zero life skills due to them having some sort of 'ism,' that means they demand adjustments which probably can't all be given.

How many years were you in? I remember having presentations on the University Cadetships in the mid 1970's, my school had a very active CCF three branches so we ofter had recruiters coming through. The condition was you had to serve a minimum period if you graduated and were wanted by the service.

All in? Just under 20 years firstly in the Navy and latterly in the Army.
