Paul Mortimer to a lesser extent. He scored a great looping header away at Notts county, which was the winner.

He certainly was not a prolific scorer for us but I recall him scoring a hat-trick at home to Southampton.
In the team that that day was Clive Allen and there were comments relating to 'Flanagan and Allen' who sang "Underneath the arches".

And when Allen was at Arsenal with Frank Stapleton and Alan Sunderland there was talk of their SAS strikeforce. Then they were replaced by Tony Woodcock and Lee Chapman and didn't stress the WC aspect.

I have spoken to Lee Chapman who played under Brian Clough at Nottm Forest.
He mentioned that Clough used to buy presents for the wives and partners of his players believing that if you kept them happy the players would be happy.

To give them their correct name ,Charlton Nil ,they dont give me a moment's thought ,never had any mates and have never worked with any , not any that have admitted as much anyway .

It seems a lifetime ago when we used to play them regular and even then they were just a team from a part of London that was and is a pain to get to , something thats strangely often directed at us .

I suppose if you come from the Bromley side you might cross paths but in South Croydon the only red shirt you are likely to see is from Liverpool of Manchester on a 10 year kid because his mum saw them on the telly once.

I went to a high school that is affiliated with CPFC, has produced a lot of Palace players, had a group of Palace youth players placed there at the time by the club, and still knew a handful of Charlton fans there. I didn't ever ask but you'd assume a family link.

My recollection of Mortimer is a lazy waste of space. Signed as a replacement after John Salako got injured and was useless. Quickly got injured himself then spent match days on the ale in the Players Lounge. Didn’t he end up back at the Clowns after completing his mission?

Mortimer did return to Charlton possibly signed by Curbishley/Gritt.

I used to watch a lot of Chalton games back in the 80s at selhurst park. I had a soft spot for them.

I found it strange too that Palace basically gave them somewhere to live and they hated our guts. A analogy could be created for someone giving a homeless person a place to live. You get the idea.

Football fans are a different breed.

As I lived just off Portland Road at the time I’ve got to admit I had a stroll up to a handful of their games at selhurst as well, my excuse was having just got married and moved into our first flat I couldn’t afford palace away games at the time…….although Croydon FC just over Road was a more enjoyable experience than Charlton 😃

We left at half time 2-0 down and went back to the pub we were using in Nottingham. Asked the landlord why their fans looked so miserable when they trooped in after the game and he said ‘What do you expect when they’ve lost 3-2’. 😆. We didn’t know wether to laugh or cry!
