I am a regular reader of their fans forum. I have a soft spot for Charlton but also a bit of Schadenfreude.

From 2 days ago from the Guardian:

Charlton’s US owners have put the club up for sale just three years after taking over at the Valley. The Championship’s ownership group is understood to have engaged Oakwell Sports Advisory to find what would be the club’s fifth owners in the past six years.

In a sales deck sent to potential investors, which has been seen by the Guardian, Oakwell describes Charlton as “the last remaining football club upside opportunity in London”. Oakwell also claims that Charlton would provide new owners with an opportunity for five to 10 times equity growth through promotion to the Premier League, commercial expansion and investment in women’s football.

Oakwell did the deal that led to the Bournemouth owner, Bill Foley, buying the Prem rugby club Exeter Chiefs this summer, and is helping the Rugby Football League to secure external investment, but has little recent history of completing football transactions.

Charlton’s location in south-east London is a plus, while the Valley is a modern stadium with capacity of 27,000, but the club do not own the ground, which belongs to the hated former owner Roland Duchâtelet.

Having considered looking at alternative sites elsewhere, last year Charlton extended the lease on the Valley until 2040.

Charlton has repeatedly changed hands since the fans succeeded in forcing out Duchâtelet in 2020, when the club had three owners in quick succession. Duchâtelet sold Charlton to East Street Investments for just £1 in January 2020, but the consortium initially led by the former football agent Matt Southall collapsed amid in-fighting and an acrimonious court case, with the club eventually bought by the Danish-American business Thomas Sandgaard later that year.

Then in 2023, Sandgaard sold Charlton to a group of five US investors called Global Football Partners (GFP) led by Gabriel Brener via their UK subsidiary, SE7 Partners.

Under GFP, Charlton returned to the Championship for the first time in five years in 2025 by winning the League One playoff final at Wembley, while the women’s team were promoted to WSL1 last season.

GFP paid around £15m for Charlton three years ago, but having invested in the stadium and training ground and seen Nathan Jones’s side consolidate the club in the Championship, will be looking for several times that figure.

Charlton do not own their own ground or training ground, they have fairly large debts and their assets will be whatever cash they have and the players, who aren't worth much .

Obvious question if this is such a marvellous business opportunity then why are you selling?

The club has since denied the board are selling claiming they are looking for new investment. So the billionaire owners don't want to put their own money into the club they want some other mug to do the same. Charlton fans have pointed out that in their denial of the story the club statement was a non denial denial. In other words they will sell if the offer is right.

In many ways their board is similar to ours, American owners with deep pockets who are reluctant to invest. I guess the difference is that we have real assets and PL income.

Anyway another dawn another day another set of owners with a 5 year plan that has now mysteriously disappeared.

Who'd be a Charlton fan.

Not owning the stadium and training ground is not a recipe for success.

From that perspective, Charlton are punching above their weight in the Championship.

And if you had invested in Charlton, what are you getting for your money ? The players contracts, some sponsorship and some merchandise sales ??

Why would you even do it ?!

Now they need more money as it appears the current owners aren't willing to put more in themselves - good luck with that one.

Personally, I've always detested Charlton. More so than even Brighton.

I was disappointed that they got out of L1 but I think there's a good chance they'll be heading back there soon.

I hate hating Charlton because my uncle and grandad support/supported them and it was the first games I went to with them in the early 70’s and my uncle is such a top bloke, but I can’t stand that generation that jumped on the bandwagon since their premier league days that have chose to hate us even though before they were around we gave them somewhere to play in their darkest hours

So basically fcuk ‘em, hope they get relegated and rot back in the lower leagues……..but next time I speak to my uncle I’ll be two faced and won’t say that to him 🤣

I get that but I also think there but for the grace of god go I.

And what would their fans reaction be if it was?
Tell me about it.

When we were owned by Goldberg I knew a guy who worked for the club. At first he was okay then he couldn't stop crowing about our woes it was quite childish and pointless having a conversation with him.

However as soon as Charlton got relegated he disappeared and I have never seen him since. The only consolation I got was that the club he loved and left a good job in banking to join sacked him due to their financial problems.

I'm not one to bear grudges, I have Charlton and Millwall mates, we are all pretty realistic about our clubs and can talk sensibly amongst ourselves. However I would love to see this guy and give him some back.

I met many Charlton fans like that around 2000-2007. They were complete morons and I’d love to meet them again now.

There was one particular clown that I had polite conversations with about our clubs then after we got relegated he gave me a ton of abuse and grief one night down the social club. I’m a well built fella but I’m very timid (maybe down to my autism) so I just got upset by it rather than react how others would.

A week later I passed him in the subway under Greenwich train station, no one else about.

He absolutely bricked it when I walked past him and said “hello “ with a big grin on my face. Never seen someone go so pale. It was soooo satisfying!!

the Charlton 'story' is one that Palace need to always be careful of.

Established in the prem but forced Curbishley out as they wanted 'better' football. Has been a disaster ever since. Be careful what you wish for.

In my London days i had a number of Charlton mates and they were a decent bunch.

However, after the last day relegation under Dowie (how was the bloke who conceded the pen for hand ball not sent off??) and the over the top gloating i always enjoy seeing them lose.

c**** of the very highest order whom I hope never get out of the pig swill infested shitehole from whence they come.
never met a pleasant charlton fan.
met a lot of Millwall on site work and in general pretty ok after the intial ribbing, still speak to a couple of ceramic tilers I met decades ago.
Unlike the clowns, who have often been aggresive & generally wanky on jobs.
Feck em.

I'm surprised that that day hasn't been mentioned in this thread till now. To me it's all I can think of whenever I see or hear the name mentioned. I recall that Jordan couldn't make up his mind whether to call their fans cretins or morons. Mind you, I can never forgive the fool who quite unnecessarily gave away the free kick which led to their equalising goal and our relegation.

I know a few Charlton fans, a couple being season ticket holders. Good guys, not sure where some of the comments on here come from towards there fans. Make me think we aren’t so good? Most fans are decent people and support there teams because of locality as I do Palace. No harm in friendly banter / rivalry though 🙂

To give them their correct name ,Charlton Nil ,they dont give me a moment's thought ,never had any mates and have never worked with any , not any that have admitted as much anyway .

It seems a lifetime ago when we used to play them regular and even then they were just a team from a part of London that was and is a pain to get to , something thats strangely often directed at us .

I suppose if you come from the Bromley side you might cross paths but in South Croydon the only red shirt you are likely to see is from Liverpool of Manchester on a 10 year kid because his mum saw them on the telly once.
