Mateta is the example we should cherish. He was not just average but absolutely f***ing awful for years and then, one day, he was really good.

Obviously, it wasn't actually that simple. What helped Mateta was being up top with Eze and Olise behind, and Munoz out wide. I have no doubt that if Sorloth had been here at that time instead, he'd have blossomed similarly.

Perhaps Johnson, Nketiah, Pino, or Larsen will see a similar uplift. None of them are playing with players of the Eze and Olise quality, of course, but still...

I know he’s moved to another country and he’s speaking his second language, but he doesn’t exactly come across as mr personality. I’ve always thought teams take on the personality of their manager if they’re around long enough, in this case I hope not otherwise it’s going to be a pretty dour season 🤣

This is what worries me, it's so easy to look at someone and be shallow/judge.. I looked at him in the videos, his sport wear was not flattering, had boobs and a belly, his demeanour wasn't solid..

ok we can be mature and say that doesn't matter... but we got be honest and say it plays a part.. someone walks in and you know they are in charge.

A realistic post. Last season's league form was woeful, a poorly placed finish of 15th was a warning signal that winning the tin pot Conference Cup doesn't paper over the deficiencies in the squad or recruitment.
Perhaps it's the Glasner effect, or maybe it's Parish selling the better players and not replacing them with like. One can only hope that Monsieur Sage can bring some fresh impetus to the side.

Guehi - made no secret of the fact he wasn't going to sign a new contract. That saga became an unnecessary mess which I think initially triggered Glasner.

Replacing them with the like ? Replacing arguably one of the best players in the world in Olise, a unique talent that is Ebs and one of the best central defenders in the Premier League is a tall order to say the least !

The one I don't get is Lacroix given his contract position. But clearly the player wanted the move.

My Trepidation is a moving feast in line with what we have at the moment v. the clock ticking down to both the start of the season and the end of the transfer window.

So as of now - I can only see an underwhelming league season and a similar finishing place to last year. Which we may end up being grateful for !

What I am trying to say is how often can such an amazing group come together thanks to a mix of sound recruitment and player aptitude? Was this a once in a blue moon occasion? I recognize that it it unlikely to happen again anytime soon, particularly as the change in scouting personnel has thus far not had the same level of success as previously.
I can only see that Sage is working with a less talented group than that which Glasner inherited and although Sage strikes me as a manager who has a way about him and is quietly confident in his own ability, we may well, as you say, end up being grateful for another lower mid table finish.

One of them opined that De Boer's tenure would be ephemeral before the start of the season.
I of course wish him all the very best and fervently hope that this scenario does not become reality for obvious reasons.

The problem is the whole system relies on Muñoz, Mitchell although our best defender, he isn't attacking enough for that position, if we dont get a better LWB, and Muñoz gets injured, then we are Fkduec.

I think Mitchell has massively improved going forward. Conversely, Munoz didn't ever play the same for us since his injury. But he clearly did it for Columbia - so he still has it.

Also if Munoz does get injured, Mingueza will take his place and at least he's a wing back who's spent a number of years in a decent league and has a decent amount of European experience.
