My comments were not a criticism of Sage, I recognised his outstanding success at Lens last season and of course I wish him well at our club.
I was merely highlighting the differences in managerial experience.
i think the £51m to £52m discrepancy is as the price appears to be 60m Euro. Converting that at today's FX gives £51m , however, a few weeks back it was nearer £52m.
This of course raises a couple of questions.
Why are 2 English clubs dealing in Euro? If they are maybe Lacroix did have a release clause. I'm not convinced by this as if he did it would surely have been leaked.
I think i read that Sunderland deal in Euros for their purchases, however, these are predominantly European transfers. Maybe Chelsea do the same.
If this is the price we got for Lacroix i am definitely disappointed. It's not unreasonable, but i think he is so important to us we needed more.

The report from Sky and others re Lacroix has always been in Pounds Sterling. The deals for the two young replacements have been reported in Euros.

Only the top clubs can afford their top players to stay until they are old, worth less and no longer needed e.g Salah, de Bryne. Clubs like us have to sell them high to be able to replace and progress. At some point either the player wants out (eze, olise, guehi) or we need to try and cash in at their probable peak at whatever age that is (wan bisaka, lacroiux). There are also agents agitating for a move, triple wages on offer and players looking for champions league experience. We kept Zaha until he was past his use by date (the second time after the manure chaos) and he left for a pultry amount. He could have gone a few years sooner for 70m. Its a complicated balancing act. Enjoy the roller coaster.
Surely there can't be much to complicate the work permit for a full France international moving from one English top division club to another English top division club?
In fact, surely he already has a valid UK work permit, and given he would be immediately switching to the new "company" without any free agency, his current work permit should be valid?
I think our resident border force expert can confirm but I believe a work permit is linked to a job. Otherwise people would come to the UK as carers and then switch to other jobs which are not covered by the scheme. Thank god that doesn't happen. 😀

You asked the question why the transfer fee (which is a slightly strange figure) has been reported as a different value via different media outlets. I have explained how the discrepancy may have arisen.
Of course all UK networks will report in GBP as that is our currency, i'm not sure what your point is.
It is the FX rate movement that may be accounting for say BBC still reporting £52m and Sky sticking with £51m.
To add some logic to my theory before the WC it was reported that Chelsea had bid £47m for Lacroix, or 55m Euro. I did wonder why the Euro figure was even quoted.
Zaha left on a bosman after running down his contract. Maybe you are confusing his exit with Benteke's where we did get a small fee.
To my knowledge no club bid £70m for Wilf. I think Arsenal bid about £40m ish to test the water and then Everton came in with a higher bid but it included 2 of their players as makeweights. Both bids were c 3 years before he left.

I should imagine like any modern day footballers it’s all about the money mainly. Although I suspect any of our top players probably know it’s gone as far it’s it’s going to go with us. We can’t carry on punching above our weight and selling our best players, eventually it’s going to catch up with us, even though it’s what we have to do to survive and keep trying to compete at this level

In fairness to parish. Wilf pretty much kept us up every season and that's 100 million + each season we get. He may not have been worth that to clubs like arsenal but he certainly was for us.

The Everton Director of Sport Marcel Brands has publicly stated (about 3 months after the event) that Everton only made one bid for Zaha, circa £52 million, despite lots of news outlets reporting a second bid involving other players to make up a sum of circa £70 million no such second bid was made.
Its a fair point. Never worth 70m, but pretty priceless for us.
I always wonder if holding on to Wilf too long, would have prevented others signing with us (nervy about getting trapped)

I am not aware that Wharton has a 'Release Clause' but I believe a 15% sell-on clause was agreed with Blackburn.
