Warnock's signings also included Paddy McCarthy, Jose Fonte, Claude Davis, Darren Ambrose and Shaun Derry.

Very early days but could be good business getting in 2 young French centre halves with the LaCroix money. If they are as good as Canvot then it definitely will be. Canvot will be one of the best centre halves in Europe in the next couple of years imo.
They have to hit the ground running if they are to replace Max though. JD quickly grew a lot under Oli to get to the level he is even now... but Chrislain and Rafa would have to be at least at JD's current level from day one.

My understanding is that Augsburg are looking to break their transfer record for a sale which I understand is 26m euros. Let's say they accept 28m euros and we can get the young defender from Brest for say 5m euros we'll still have about 27m euros left out of the Lacroix money for whatever purpose (another player or balancing the books as the case may be?)
We would have ยฃ18m left out of the reported ยฃ51m fee to be received.

Agreed. And it wonโ€™t easy. My guess would be any new centre halves will be introduced gradually and not thrown straight in.

The fee for Max is not enough. No sale. Get lost Chelsea.
Totally agree,we are being quoted crazy prices for unknown quantities and should up the asking price of a known quantity,a full international proven at this level.ยฃ52 m seems derisory, in today's market.Pay up or F/Off!!!

I am led to believe that the fee is 60m euros and so my figures are euros not pounds., since I expect both foreign clubs will want to be paid in euros
Ahh yes, that makes sense DB.

What exactly is Hobbs doing to protect our asset base??
Sell cheap and pay over inflated prices for complete unknowns is an act of stupidity.

You could see a logic to our transfer dealings up until January, when it all became a bit scattergun.
Johnson, Larsen, Guessand (loan) and the bizarre failed attempt to land McNeil.

I'm sure the club could argue that we stayed up and we won in Europe so it was a successful season and the squad played a full part in that success.
They could also contend that it was thought Mateta was off so it was prudent to bring in another centre forward and Glasner had asked for another option to run in behind and that was Johnson.

The fact they haven't impressed particularly so far may not have raised too many eyebrows in the hierarchy(early days, settling in etc).

Let's see who Hobbs brings in this window and how he interacts with Sage and Parish before making an assessment.
After years of the Steve/ Dougie partnership there's going to be a new dynamic at play with the new triumvirate operating in tandem.

they were the better ones.

I remember he bought Nick Carle, an Australian from Bristol City for a cool ยฃ1m, which was a lot for us then, and he struggled badly and was released 2 years later.

I recall the left-footed Carle. An admirable work ethic and had a good strike on him.
Warnock also bought Calvin Andrew !

I met Carl and his wife in Sainsburyโ€™s in Chislehurst when he was with us. They were wearing matching fur coats and looked like a pair of ostriches. A typical trendy footballer and too good looking for his own good. Gave me short shrift when I said hello so loudly slagged him of off all game at the next Palace match ๐Ÿ˜ฌ

Didn't we play them just before we bought him? Must've been playing for a transfer.

I don't rate Matsima. No where near Lacroix standard in any metric.
i'm not sure if Matsima is any good.

I think we need to trust the manager and scouts etc on this one.
Not dissimilar to Lacroix's deal a couple of years ago. Decent record in Germany, similar size and age etc.
Can definitely improve and hopefully will hit the ground running.

If a deal get's agreed for c30m Euro that's cยฃ25m which seems ok into today's mad valuations.

I'm pretty sure I met him and he was alright. However, I still slagged him off because he played crap.
