Chrislain Matsima

If this is true what should we do? Pay what they want or keep haggling? Since he reportedly wants to come and Challobah doesn't I'd pay the extra to get the deal done.

Yeah, pay what they want regardless. That’ll be more ammo for the Hobbs Haters to fling at him !

It looks as though they're asking for about another £2 m rather than an extra £25 m. Easy to say when it's not my money I know.
If it's really that little then yes but I suspect it's more. We need Augsburg to budge a little otherwise as Runningman says, it'll be more ammo for Hobbs haters and we'll be seen as a soft touch who can't get top money for those we sell but pay top money for those we buy.

100%

If our transfer policy is predicated on protecting Mr. Hobbs' reputation we really are stewed, screwed and tattooed.

I'm not a fan of Mr Hobbs. My main concern is our being seen as a soft touch as in the second part of my post.
I guess it's a question of expedience. If they don't want or have to sell below their asking price there's not a lot we can do and prolonging the process doesn't benefit anyone.

Agreed. It depends also on how desperate we are to get this particular defender. If we have a suitable back-up lined up we could simply threaten to walk away and see if Augsburg will compromise; otherwise we cough up and get the deal done.

My understanding is that Augsburg are looking to break their transfer record for a sale which I understand is 26m euros. Let's say they accept 28m euros and we can get the young defender from Brest for say 5m euros we'll still have about 27m euros left out of the Lacroix money for whatever purpose (another player or balancing the books as the case may be?)

True. Situations like this also make you wonder what the player involved thinks about it. Maybe they're not bothered at all but it doesn't scream welcome that we've haggled down to the wire for a player we supposedly want.

We're back linked with Chaloboah, supposedly trying to hijack his mooted move to Italy.
Perhaps the story has no real foundation but has been leaked in an attempt to get the deal with Matsima concluded.
The only thing that seems certain is that we are in for a centre back or two.

We came back quickly with a second improved offer which we ( i assume ) thought would get it over the line , but they said no .

Another quick offer is showing we’re desperate and is just as likely to give another refusal to try and get more .

Makes negotiating sense to pause , announce interest in other players , let them “ sweat “ and then come back with an improved offer .

Saving 1-2 million on each deal helps in the long term .

If we consistently come in with matching offers , the clubs we’re buying off push the envelope .

It hasn’t been SP’s pattern and the reality is what he’s been doing has paid off .

We’re not a “ BIG “ club and while there’s occasional high prices , most of the time we don’t pay OTT .

It’s just part of the business .

It will drive some players bonkers and do a dummy spit and others accept it for the reality it is .

Brighton have rinsed Chelsea a few times for tens of millions more than we would have got out of them. We need to stand up - both at the contract stage and over the asking price. We might have to accept being a stepping stone club but it feels like we're grateful to players for deigning to take millions a year until a better offer arrives.
Neither Hobbs nor Parish have the skills of the professional poker player at Brighton.

I’m sure negotiations don’t happen in a vacuum. There will be noises being made from the multiple people involved. Wait too long before a revised bid and historically the likes of West Ham nip in and gazump you. Fans assume lots of things but largely are just guessing.

It's easy to be critical of the club in its transfer dealings. But it's a dynamic and ever changing market.

If we look at the Matsima deal, Augsburg are in a similar position to Palace with Lacroix. Whether you or I agree with the fee received for him, there was a price point which Chelsea met. The player wanted the move as does Matsima. I don't think there's a vast gap between the fee they want and what Palace will pay - I expect this deal to get done.

Quite rightly Palace are reported to be looking at other options and have been linked with a number of centre backs as a direct replacement for Lacroix. To my knowledge, this is the only one that has progressed to a formal bid stage.

Hope you're right - he seems to be a useful player.
Has their asking price been reported anywhere? Beyond a reference to them wanting more than their previous record fee all I've seen is our offer(s) which may be way off.
