Mateta to AC Milan?

Feels like this offer has been on the table for a while.

Nice that he's seeing if he can get a move first, and if not maybe he'll stay and double his wage!

Wirth Europe it wouldn't be the worst time to have 2 propper strikers.

I think we should being messed about by him and sell him .
It seem clear he wants to leave so let him .

I'd be amazed if he signed a new contract with us. He's worked his way up through football and now possibly has the chance to go onwards and upwards again. Whilst we can probably match the big Italian clubs for wages, and our league is the best in the world, we can't offer him that romantic career peak of being the main centre forward for a historic club who are trying to win the league. For a player like Mateta, who isn't good enough to be first choice for a really top club like Barcelona, Man City, PSG, being no9 for Milan or Juventus is perfect.

Plus, this is how it goes when you're a development and selling club. Not only do the young crown jewels move on to the top level, the next level of player down also want to go. They all see us as a stepping stone because that's what we've sold ourselves to them as.

I will be gutted if he goes to Forest.

But if we are not a stepping stone, what are we?

Pick them up on the way down? The ones with no ambition?

I think we have seen the best of JP in a Palace shirt. He improved his overall play and worked well as his focal point “big man” role.

He is not young, isn’t blessed with pace and has been seen to sulk when things don’t go his way.

he has been instrumental in our rise but not sure he is our future.

I think it was Brian Clough that said "never buy a player on his way down " and we have had many over the years that would prove that point . A couple of decent ones ,but most have been rubbish .

Give me a hungry young kid wanting to get to the top for a couple of seasons any day of the week .

In the middle of that you have the ones like Mateta who is probably at his playing level with us but just want the $$$ and dont care much where they play . Its a wonder really that he hasn't buggered off to Saudi .

Only way we can be though isn't it. Newcastle have proved even getting insanely wealthy owners doesn't work anymore.

Id like him to stay but, also, if we can get a decent fee then fair enough. Every player who joins us and moves somewhere bigger or gets international honours is another argument for prospective signings.

That's how I try to view it anyway.

Agreed, and whilst he did ok last season, his best period coincided with having Eze and for a short while Olise as well, to set chances up on a plate for him.

I agree but this merry-go-round relies on successful recruitment and a certain law of averages, given not every signing is going to work out (or work out immediately).

It's difficult to see anyone breaking into the top half consistently with such an approach. On this point, I'll be interested to see how Villa and Newcastle do this year.

From a Palace perspective, it is tough to see where "the next level" is in terms of the Premier League. Maybe it is a few bloddied noses for the big teams each season, a real go in the cups, and no real flirtation with the drop zone by March each year. Coventry City in the 1980s and 1990s comes to mind.

What might change that narrative for us is if the academy started producing first team players who made an impact.

For what it’s worth his big chance conversion rate was by some considerable distance the worst in the premier league!

Strikers are expensive but £30M buys us a significant prospect to complement and hopefully surpass JSL and Eddie!

Sell him, he can hardly finish his dinner, and already defecated on us before.

I'm not knocking it. Palace being a develop and sell club is mostly a reflection of wider footballing economics. I just feel that Mateta illustrates a knock on effect of that approach.

I wonder if there was once a sense that we could keep a core of good, senior players to act as the heart and soul of the team, remaining as a constant whilst a smaller number of stars-in-the-making came, grew, and went around that core? That would give us the best of both worlds, the excitement and financial rewards of an Olise or Eze, alongside the cultural solidity of the MacArthurs, Tompkins, Wards etc. A core of people who knew that Palace was as good as it was going to get for them and so wouldn't let the star players, who maybe would have better options, get away with less than proper commitment.

What we are perhaps seeing is that, actually, our second-tier players want to move onwards and upwards too, having seen their former colleagues do so.

Not disagreeing in the case of Mateta; I was talking more generally.

I suspect a lot of PR has been done over his knee injury. He will likely not be the same player again. But if he hangs around and proves this wrong then I'll be happy.

Agreed and I think we had a great core group a couple of seasons ago (Clyne; Ward; McArthur; Zaha; Tomkins). Going back further Jedinak/Speroni etc. The playing staff turnover was way less.

Compare that to now and I do not see much of a core group left. There is also a much higher turnover. Maybe this is the new way for us but it does mean much more churn and I would say less certainty.

But 1, 7 & 2 in the seasons before it says he was lucky to be on as much as he was back then, he was happy to sign the contracts and has finally been doing the job he’s paid handsomely to do.
I agree,
It seems these days players get paid way over the odds to underperform. Then on the rare occasion they start to live up to the potential and finally start doing what they are being well paid to do in the first place they then have the cheek to start demanding a pay rise!
Thats not specifically aimed at Mateta. Seems to be footballers in general

In general though, I would guess that keeping a good striker is cheaper than buying one, whoever you are.
Depends how old said striker is, the sell on value he has and how much he is actually asking for in wages.
If we were to sign a young and hungry striker that busted a gut every game Sage could probably mould him into a useful striker.
