Mateta to AC Milan?

But if we are not a stepping stone, what are we?

Pick them up on the way down? The ones with no ambition?
Every club is a stepping stone at some point. Even Ronaldo saw United as a stepping stone when he 'earned' his move to Real. Same with Suarez when he left Liverpool. Clubs chew players up and spit them out, players use clubs to further their own career/boost their bank balance.
The likes of Joel Ward are the exception not the rule

Agreed, and whilst he did ok last season, his best period coincided with having Eze and for a short while Olise as well, to set chances up on a plate for him.
I've been saying for a long time Mateta is very overrated. If you look at at his goals he looks quality. If you look at the number of chances he has been provided (sometimes absolute sitters) to score those goals you realise any competent finisher would have done just as well.

Joel Ward probably stayed at Palace because no one came in for him. It's the same with Mitchell. There are very few loyalists in the game, though Bowen seems to be an exception

Ward said at the end of his time at Palace he had a few offers to leave Palace over the years. Some of them really good offers. Says the reason he stayed put was simply being happy where he was, family settled, satisfied with what he earned.

I'm sure if you sat down with MacArthur, Ayew, Tomkins, Koyate, or whoever, they'd probably say something similar. That's the route not taken at the moment, the one where we exploit our premier league status and location partway between London and the home counties to offer good, but not great, top flight footballers a stable but unspectacular home. Come to palace, we will pay the market rate, give you excellent training and medical facilities, you'll be part of a solid group of good players and good people, you'll be expected to do your work properly but can live outside the harshest spotlight. All you need do is keep us mid table. The best bit is, you'll play. Not 60 minutes every other week, but actually play.

I'm sure they'll be a good few who would go for that.

Of course, it's self limiting. Our transfer budget has always been whatever we could raise from sales, and we'd be cutting our own legs off from under us if we aimed to have a squad of journeymen who had found a home, as no bugger wants to buy them off us!

Still, it's not without it's appeal, nor does it lack logic.

But you could say that about every striker , if they put all the chances away you would need a 100 goals to get golden boot , as it is high 20s to low 30s

Depends how old said striker is, the sell on value he has and how much he is actually asking for in wages.
If we were to sign a young and hungry striker that busted a gut every game Sage could probably mould him into a useful striker.
Also depends on how good we are at digging out deals worth more than what is paid down. In recent history we've pulled it off almost habitually, though since Dougie has been poached away it's yet to be seen how much we are still capable.

Not saying he doesn't love the club, but his wife and father in law would make it much harder to leave
It would certainly make for some frosty dinners with the in-laws. Bit like the rest of the world has.

JP is not the best finisher, but he is an absolute nightmare for defenders due to his size and strength. He went from being a flop to a star when his hold-up play developed what seemed like overnight. Suddenly, even the best PL defenders struggled to get the ball off of him, which enabled us to get up the pitch and create chances. If he does go, then I will no longer be able to laugh at how a highly-paid sportsman somehow manages to look knackered just running onto the pitch. He's an absolute nutter, but I still love him, so I hope he stays.

He's the most knackered looking player since Steve Archibald who looked like he'd slept in his car after a week on the lash. JPM saves all his energy for going Radio Rental in post match interviews.

I disagree. N'ketiah for example is said to be a lethal finisher. converts something like 1 in 3. Problem is we dont play to his strengths and he therefore struggles for minutes let alone chances.
Mateta on the other hand is tailor made to the system we play however there have been some genuine cases last season where he was gift wrapped 9 or even 10 chances before he converted one of them.
The amount of goals he scored papered over those cracks and his poor finishing got almost forgotten. I was amazed when Milan wanted him in January.
The Liverpool home game last year is a prime example of what I'm talking about. Mateta missed so many guilt edged chances it was becoming embarrassing. Then he gets his goal and thats all forgotten. Then N'ketiah comes on as a sub with what? 10 minutes to go? Bang! One chance and he scores.
I'm not bigging up Eddie by any means. He has his faults like everyone else. Way better finisher than Mateta though

Thknk you need to check your stats he has only got on avg 1 in 10 chances on target during his career , so nketiah is a bad choice to compare with

Got to feel sorry for Eddie , if he’s 1 goal every 3 chances , then he’s only had 72 chances in the premier league in 9 years.

What’s his earning per goal over the 9 years? That would be an interesting stat.
