These guys differ from the others you mentioned. Olise, we had no choice on (and Parish did well to get the final year out of him); Eze was keen to go and we got a good price; if we hadn't won the Conference Guehi going might have been the one to regret. Lacroix at a premium price would be acceptable if it wasn't seen as being needed to buy Johnson and Larsen. I can't see Sarr or Wharton (unless it's for 117mill) leaving. They are our crucial two players, along with Munoz

I understand that we couldn't do much about Olise, Eze and Guehi.
My point is why compound the issue by selling other key assets who are on long term contracts when we don't have the same pressures as on the aforementioned three players?
Furthermore, if we let e.g Lacroix go because ' we don't want to stand in his way,' the likes of Wharton and Sarr would also be entitled to say to the club well we don't want you stand in our way either.

I’m afraid where the players concerned, as in hanging around for the duration of the contract, they don’t!! It just protects the club from getting nothing for a valuable asset

Agreed. Most players want to climb the ladder as far as they can. They sign 5 year deals like Guehi did but once they know they're going to be in demand by bigger clubs they're not interested in any offers from their current club to improve and extend their contract. The latest example is Scott at Bournemouth who has 2 years left on his 5 year contract and won't extend. Bournemouth, no doubt will sell him soon to maximise their profit.

Lacroix and Wharton both have 3 years left. It looks like Lacroix will go this Summer and, unless a crazy offer comes in before, Wharton next summer. As for Sarr (also 3 years left) who knows?

With how much Europa League (all European competitions) tax the team in terms of fixtures, don’t you think that the club will reinvest some of that in additional talent? This is a tricky conundrum as it involves several factors that affect us all in life (job security, wages, personal achievements and family stability).

I’m sure LaCroix has nothing but good feelings towards Palace, but no one party has full control over the ultimate outcome.

We lost Olise yet won the FA Cup. We lost Eze and Guehi yet still won the Conference League.

I recognize this is unsustainable but this “model” will be our lane for some time to come. Clubs like Newcastle and Villa are struggling to keep heads above water in search of the next level and money invested clubs like Forest have yet to reach our level of achievements.

LaCroix has helped deliver those trophies, so if he wants to stay I’m sure Steve will do the right thing, but any player who’s mindset is compromised is a liability.

We will know the outcome in a few weeks!

I hope he stays because he is a great player and a real leader - one of the few we have in my view - but if he does go two positives from a Palace perspective:

1. Good centrebacks do seem to be more in supply than in other positions. So hopefully we can get someone good enough in to replace him.
2. Best time to sell players historically has been after a major tournament like the Euros or the World Cup. So hopefully we get top price for him which can only help 1.

This is why I take an opposing view to those who suggest letting our players go, even when on long term contracts, as we'd be breaking some sort of tacit understanding that we were a stepping stone to a bigger club for them should we seek to hold them to a contract.

If we 'can't stand in the way ' of Lacroix moving to Chelsea, why shouldn't the same logic apply for Sarr to Manchester United or Wharton to Liverpool?

We have to draw a line somewhere where key assets are concerned.
We've already lost Olise, Eze and Guehi are surely not at a stage where we are running a stall at Berwick St Market instead of an aspirational professional football club.

Thats where my head is with all of this. Its a good problem to have. 5 years ago there was v limited chat about out players. Now we have a squad of those on the way up.

One thing we need to do/do better/more of (no idea if we do or dont) is be more proactive in extending contracts.

e.g. Wharton is a 100m player in the making (with the right contract length). Looking at dates he's now 2 years into a 5 year contract. IMO we need to be offering him more money now, given his importance, and push for a new 5 year. Doesn't mean he'll sign it of course.

With our lack of goals, we absolutely cannot afford to lose Sarr. To put it mildly, Johnson is not going to replace those goals. No one currently in our team or squad is.
That's the reality of this. Losing Sarr now is a season killing move.
Unless we can find and afford a 20 goal player. Which sounds doubtful because someone else will have bought them.
We've been here before and gone down.
