Mateta to AC Milan?

We need all our strikers firing , Larsen has shown he can score , Johnson if Herbie can get him believing in himself , would give us more options , but most of all we need midfield getting at least 15 goals between them this season , if they had got 10 last season we would have finished top half
Midfield is a real challenge. Tyrick Mitchell has outscored the combined efforts of Doucoure, Hughes, Kamada, Lerma and Wharton and Devenny has equalled their total.

Agreed and part of the problem as I see it is effectiveness from set pieces.

Who are our main free kick takers? What returns do they get? I think this is an area we can improve on massively.

Not when he was floundering for the first couple of years he was with us
He suffered from Hodgsonitis. As much as I respect Roy for the way he kept us above the dreaded drop zone, he stifled our strikers through the way he set up and his failure to give players such as Mateta and Sorloth sufficient runs in the team as starters. Even Benteke caught Hodgsonitis after his initial goal spurt and Roy's arrival. owing to a combination the ultra defensive set-up and Benteke#s own laziness.

But 1, 7 & 2 in the seasons before it says he was lucky to be on as much as he was back then, he was happy to sign the contracts and has finally been doing the job he’s paid handsomely to do.
If you aren't picked to play for most of the season or get brought on for the last 10 minutes to give the favoured striker a rest, you can't expect to score many goals.
For the record:
  • 20/21 (after arriving in Jan 21) he played 218 minutes with 2 starts and 5 sub appearances and scored just 1 goal (but what a goal at B******n.
  • 21/22 he had 13 starts in the PL scoring 5 times but never having more than a starting run of 3 games. Vieira, after the opening beating at Chelsea, gave him just one sub appearance of 4 minutes until Boxing Day., when he came on as a sub for half an hour. He started the next game 2 days later and scored.
  • 22/23 just 6 starts and 19 sub appearances and yes just 2 goals but the 2nd was the winning goal in a 4 minute mini cameo against Leicester in Hodgson's first game back but he still ended up on the bench for the rest of the season with a combined total of 64 minutes in 6 sub appearances.
so just 21 starts in two and a half seasons and never more than 3 starts in a row - what chance does a striker have with that kind of treatment?
  • 23/24 it wasn't until Edouard was injured in Dec 23 that Mateta got any run of starts after that game resulting in him scoring 15 further goals in 22 games after the one he scored in the game Edouard was injured.
Basically, once he was given a run of starts he showed us all what he could do. Strikers need confidence and that only comes when they get given a decent run of games.

And, yes, I've been blowing Mateta's trumpet from well before he started getting regular starts so I am biased.

He suffered "hodgsonitis" but viera was his manager for the best part of the 2 out of the 3 seasons he woefully underperformed in!!

All depends if he wants to stay or not.

No point in keeping if wants out, hardly going to get the best out of him.

I think we will be in the Guehi situation again, one year left and won't sign a new contract. Our hand will be forced.

It sounds like he's been offered an upgraded contract before, and again now. So Not really sure its a case of being under/overvalued.

The guy has 1 more move in his career. I can completely understand that if he has a chance to play at a big/historic club he's going to take it. Who wouldn't.

Just need to ensure we maximise the fee and get it done (if its going to happen).
